J.M.
Hi M.:
Your sons actions are not abnormal for his age.Children become more aware of their bodies at this stage, and they tend to worry about something foreign coming out of that body.I guess you might compare it to A woman who might experience A large blot clot during her menstrual. It doesn't seem normal, and its sort of scary.I don't believe hes intentionally trying to make a mess.I think that he is exploring his genitals,(which is quite normal)and while he has his hand in his pants, because of the sensation he gets,he relaxes and therefore has a bowel movement or wets.Once he realizes what he's done,he is lost as to how to get the mess off of his hands, and attempts to get it off making more of a mess. I understand his action is frustrating to you, however Your reaction,is going to play a big part,in how he gets passed this, better understands and moves on to accomplish his goal. You mentioned (Pants) So I'm hoping that means underwear and not (Pullups) He won't move forward,as long as he is wearing something that absorbs any accidents. He needs to feel uncomfortable,he needs to recognize and be aware of what his body is doing,so he knows when to act.(Go to the potty) Patience, and understanding. Letting him know that you understand its not easy, but building up his self confidence, so he wants to do better and please you.I'm sure you know that Shaming him,or humiliating him for accidents while he's learning, will cause confusion and relapses.I wish you and your growing son the best.
