We took up ths nasty carpet that was in our house about a month ago and it definitely has its pros and cons. My question is "do any of you have a hardwood floor cleaner you like" ? "and a certain kind of mop" ? We have a yellow lab and I do daycare, right now the dog is shedding ALOT of hair, it sucks I have to swiffer everyday. Wanting the floor to just stay shiny like it does when it's wet. Thanks in advance :) W.

So What Happened?

First off I want to thank everyone for all their input on the wood floor. All of your responses give me some different things to try. We sweep and/or swiffer every few days and then have to mop every couple also. They mop I'm using now has a coral sponge on it but it collects all the dirt on it and then when I mop it seems just to spread the dirt around.

So over the weekend I tried the halloway house quick shine and it works awesome thank everyone very much who reccomended this stuff it did awesome for our floor. Also I got this big swiffer like mop that has a washable cover on it and it works awesome also. And then we found a mop that is just for wood floors, all of this we found at wal-mart. thanks again, Werndy

The good thing is that you do see all the dog hair. It makes you clean it daily. Imagine what nasty hair build up you probably had in the carpet and really couldn't see!

Hi W.,

Like you we pulled up carpet in our house and now have hard woods. All of our hardwoods are old. We had to completely refinish them. I also have a hard time keeping them shiny. I use swiffer as well everyday due to having a 9 month old of my own and a 7 month old that I babysit. Once a week I use Murpheys oil soap and once a month I use Formby's Furniture Workshop Lemon Oil Treatment. You get it in the furniture polish area. You need to do it when you can keep people off of it for about an hour. I use it really generously so it takes a little bit to soak in. It really does the job. As far as a mop I just use the swiffer and when I use the oil soap and treatment I use a cloth on my hands and knees. I know it is horrible but I have not found a mop that does not tear up on the floor due to its age. I hope this helps.

I have hardwood floors in half of my house and I have 4 cats, so I understnad the plight of pet hair. LOL. I have a push broom-type thing that I use once or twice a week. It's sort of rectangular with rounded corners. Instead of a regular mop or swiffer type pad, it has a cloth cover and it picks up a ton of dirt and pet hair. Then you can just take the cover and throw it in the wash. Hope this helps!

Halloway house quick shine. I clean my floor with murphys oil soap first and then layer the quick shine on it really leaves your floors with a shiny polished look. It is like a sealer so when you put it on 1st make sure your floor is clean, vacumed and moped 2nd that it is dry and then use one of those giant sponge brushes. It will last shiny for weeks . I have a big fluffy dog and he sheds a lot and it really covers up his little scratches on the floor. I believe this only works on hardwood. Use it, Ihave used every product to make the floors shiny and this was the only one that worked.

Hello,
Someone else mentioned Halloway house this is what I use and love it. I have original 50 year old hardwood floors in my house and they have never been refinished. I use murphy's oil soap or just warm water and mop the floor clean then I use the Halloway house you just spray it down and mop over it to cover the floor. It is wonderful. I have used mop & glow for hardwoods (It is terrible), I have used the orange glow hardwood cleaner, but it is more expensive and only keeps the shine for a little while. You can also use endust, spray it on and work it over your floors with a damp sponge. But never use pledge, it creates a skating rink. Good luck, even though the pet hair gets annoying at least we can see it, and spilled drinks and food are never a problem. I know when I clean it up it is completely clean not hiding in carpet.

I have floors that look like hardwood but are really ceramic. I wanted to have the wet look all the time, so I put quick shine on it....BIG MISTAKE. It looked great for a couple years and then it started shedding. I tried putting more Quick shine until there were so many spots that were shedding it was crazy. Then I tried removed it and wow that is crazy, i have to get on my hands and knees and scrub it. I have about a 1000 sq.ft of this so it is a big job. I had someone come out and give me an estimate and that was 600.00 plus we had to move everthing out. I have friend that does hardwood floors and he said just leave it and mop with vinager and it will come up but it may be a few months before it is all up. This whole process has been a year. I loved the wet look for the first couple years but I hate removing it. If I could do it all over again I wouldn't.

**my friend said you don't want real shiney hardwood floors because the more shine the more you can see all the imperfections. Having a dog and daycare it may show all the imperfections.**
Good luck!

W.,

I really like the Orange Glo Hardwood Floor Cleaner. We took up carpet when I very first moved in and the hard woods weren't as nice as they were in the sections we pulled up before we decided to do this project. I love the Orange Glo but and you can use it to clean up little spills also with out having to clean the whole floor. It works magic on the hard woods. I even clean the trim with it because it cleans it up beautifully!! Good Luck.
