Hi moms, this is an older person type question. My mom lost her hearing aids aides? sp?
and will need to replace them. Her last ones were over $4000 but she never liked one of them and said it hurt her inside of her ear. Well, she lost them while on vacation and I told her they are too expensive to just replace without doing some research. So, you are my first attempt at finding what your experiences are? anyone???? Thanks, K. K.

Hi K.,
The key is finding a practitioner that is willing to work with your mom until she is happy. Dr. Kurt Smith has an excellent reputation. He is at HearingLife at Maizeland & Academy. ###-###-####.

If you have seen those inexpensive hearing aids advertised in magazines and Sunday newspapers flyers, I have heard from several older people who have testified that they are just as good as the ones that they had paid big bucks for. So I would suggest that you give those a try. One person suggested Cabella's for the place that she bought hers. Cabella's sells sporting goods, and these are supposed to be for hunters.
Good luck.

There are many types out there. I suggest going to see an audiologist to see what is right for her (hopefully insurance covers). I used to work for Colorado ENT Specialists and they have great audiologist in two offices. Their number is ###-###-#### if you are interested in checking them out. There is also a program called Care Credit, not sure if you are familiar that could help pay for the aids up front and you pay it back as a credit card. Not all medical offices take it, but this one does. Good luck.

Does your Costco closest to you offer a hearing center? They are the least expensive and have a money back guarantee as well. I work in the South Ogden Costco and we have an excellent audiologist. I have a friend that paid about $900.00 for one ear.

K.,
My husband got his first hearing aids from a stand alone place that just checks your hearing and tries to sell you the most expensive pair so they can make their commission. He tried to get used to them but soon returned them. We ended up with an audioligist (sp?) at the medical clinic. He is very happy with them. He even gets free maintenance on them and reprogramming as necessary. The gal there was more focued on getting him the right aids for him, not on the commission. Just my two cents. Hope it helps and good luck.

There are the hearing aids that you wear in the ear and the hearing aids that are worn behind the ear. My husband wears the hearing aids that are worn in the ear. A mold was made of his ear, and the hearing aid was made to the mold so that the hearing aid fits perfectly in his ear. These hearing aids cost about $3,000 to $4,000 an aid. If this is the type of hearing aid that she had, and that she will buy again, make sure the fit is right from the start. If it bothers her, make her go back and have them adjust it. For that kind of money, they should make sure the fit is comfortable.

Hi K.!
I work with low income senior citizens. Check out a website that offers hearing aids to those who qualify (based on income and assets) for $100 per aid. They are worth up to $2,500 each. The reason they are so inexpensive is because it is provided directly from the manufacturer. The website is www.sotheworldmayhear.org/hearnow/. It will explain the program and you can download an application. The next step is getting her to actually wear them! That is difficult to enforce. So just encourage her. Good luck!
