I've always been an easy bruiser but while I was pregnant, I never had ONE bruise. I LOVED it! Now, my bruises are starting up again. Anytime I hit or bump into something, I'll end up with the ugliest blackest bruise. What can I do???? Right now I have an ugly one on my thigh from bumping into the car door, and one on my calf from running into my son's exersaucer. We have dinner plans tonight and I had to pass up on wearing a dress because of the bruise on my calf. :/

I don't know about fixing a bruise once you have it, but having low iron levels (anemia) can cause easy bruising. I wonder if prenatal vitamins might have been helping to keep you bruise-free? They are high in iron. Sounds like taking a high-iron multivitamin daily might help you. I'd ask your doctor about it though, in case there is another cause. Things like thyroid malfunction can be masked by symptoms that don't seem to be related. One blood draw can be used to check for all the necessary things -- thyroid hormone levels, progesterone/estrogen levels, iron levels, vitamin/mineral levels, etc.

I have been told that bruising easily can also be caused by taking Ibuprofin. My mother and I used to bruise a lot and we both took a lot of Ibuprofin/Motrin for headaches, cramps, etc. We cannot take it anymore because we both have stomach ulcers. However, we've noticed that we don't bruise quite as easily anymore.

Hey Alex!
Vitamin K cream is your best bet for prevention/cosmesis. Have you had your platelets checked?? You might need to do that.....

When my oldest son was younger, he bruised very easily. The doctor said to give him vitamin C and vitamin E daily. It definitely helped. Have you continued your pre-natal vitamins since you had your baby? If not, maybe you should try going back on them and see if that helps. I took pre-natal vitamins for a year after I had my last child and when I stopped, I noticed my energy levels went down and I didn't feel quite as good. I'm back on them now, 2 years after having my youngest son, and I feel much better. Good luck!

Not to freak you out, but if you bruise easily, you might want to get your liver checked out. When I was in HS I was having the same problem and the dr. suggested I be tested for hepititus (sp?) since it can cause you to bruise from the slighted bump (I used to joke that that a stuff breeze would leave a bruise on me!). Anyway, thank goodness I didn't have hepititus, but the dr. did notice that my liver functions were down and I had some scar tissue on it that she said must have occurred from some type of injury I sustained (news to me, I don't ever rememeber being that injured to hurt my liver!). So anyway, just a thought that you might want to get checked out. I was also anemic <low iron levels> and not sure if the two go together, as has been suggested, but a prescription for Slow FE should do the trick.

Hi Alexandra,
My mother and I are also very easy bruisers. About a week before my mother's wedding she fell and got the worst black eye. She used vinegar. She poured some out onto a wash cloth and held it over the bruise. The next morning it was much better and by the wedding day it was gone. I know what won't help for the dinner party tonight, but will help it heal faster than not. Hope this helps. Have a great day.
