Help! Where Can I Get This Sweet, Matted Stray Cat Groomed for Cheap??

I have been feeding this sweet, long haired, grey cat that wondered into our neighborhood about a month ago. We already have a cat that puts the "scared" in scaredy-cat so we can't keep the stray. However, I started feeding it and put a box with a towel out for it to sleep in. Obviously this cat knows when it's got a good thing going so it has been sticking around. Its coat it horribly matted on the back half of its body and it was so thin that my fingers could almost touch on either side of its backbone, right in front of its hips. In short, this cat looks kind of like Cujo's cousin. I was hoping to fatten it up and get it groomed so we could find it a home. It is the sweetest cat. It was obviously someone's pet and got injured or sick and lost. Yesterday I tried cuting out some of the mats, but I'm afraid I am going to cut that poor cat's skin then it would be worse off. I called around to some places to get prices on getting it groomed, but they were pretty expensive-between 50-80.00. That is hard to stomach on our budget & for a cat we aren't even going to keep. PetsMart also said it had to have a current rabies shot at least 48hrs before they would groom it. So that of course means more $ with a vet visit. So what I need from you ladies are some referrals or ideas about how to get this cat some grooming/vet help more cheaply so I can find it a home or for someone to go ahead adopt it now. I don't know if it is male or female, fixed, it's age or what medical attention it might need. It doesn't have any obvious wounds or injuries (other than the pain it is probably in from all the mats in its coat). I didn't even see any fleas on it yesterday! It tries to come in our house all the time and is not skittish around my kids, the neighborhood kids or my crazy chiweenie dog.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the ideas. unfortunately, the cat got sicker. Both of its eyes seemed to have a nasty infection. I finally decided to have animal control come get it. I realize it was probably euthanized, but I didn't want it to suffer anymore. I just wish we had had the money to take it to the vet and groomer or could have found a home for it. I hope it had a nice home before whatever caused it to get lost, sick and turn up on our door step, happened to it.

A.,
It's marvelous that you are trying to help this little guy. "Cheap" and "Veterinarians" are NOT related in any way. In the past, I worked with a spay/neuter organization and I have put in a call to a vet tech that worked with us. If I can reach her, she can give shots herself but am not sure what to do about the grooming part. She might have a suggestion. Unfortunatley, being in the rescue business, I already have a registered colony and simply cannot take another. I'll make a couple more calls to see if I can find some help......if you would provide me with a phone number, I will be able to refer one of my contacts should they be able to assist you. My name is L. Fojtik and my cell number is ###-###-#### Let me know if you would rather not do this, and I will try to figure out another way.....FOOTNOTE: A. - I TALKED WITH THE VET TECH - ONLY VETS CAN GIVE RABIES SHOTS HERE IN TEXAS, SO, SHE SUGGESTED THAT YOU FIND A A LOW-COST CLINIC (CALL MARSHALL GRAIN--THEY HAVE A VET THAT COMES TO THEIR DIFFERENT STORES) AND GET THE CAT IT'S RABIES - IT SHOULD BE ABOUT $8-10. HER OTHER SUGGESTION IS TO PUT DRY CORNSTARCH ON THE FUR AND USE A LARGE TOOTHED COMB - SHE SAYS SOMETIMES THAT HELPS. ANYWAY, THE BOTTOM LINE IS IF YOU CAN GET IT A RABIES SHOT, SHE WILL PROBABLY BE ABLE TO FIND A GOOD HOME FOR THE CAT. PLEASE LET ME KNOW......

Vets and groomers are not supposed to have animals there that are not current on fecal, feline leukemia, rabies amoung others. Feline HIV/Leukemia is very contagious and doesn't always have symptoms in the beginning stages.

I would suggest having a mobile groomer come to you. They are not as strict with the shots/test requirements (I think) because the animal is not in the same facility as others.

Many vets can usually recommend a mobile groomer. Look it up on the internet or yellow pages in your area.

Try calling the spca or local animal shelter and see what they recommend. I know most reputable grooming businesses won't touch the cat without shot records, so you probably won't have any luck going that route. Sorry not much help but I thought the shelter could give you advice.

Hi A.,

I saw where you sent me an e-mail a little while ago, but I was unable to pull anything up. Would you please try again.

Thanks!
