Hello,

My daughter is 4 and she is half Italian half African American. Her hair is super curly and I just cant ever seem to get a handle on it. I wash it about 2 times a week, use Just for me hair products and detangler spray.... she wont let anyone braid it and she moves to much to keep it covered at night. I just cant seem to keep it moisturized. It gets soo dry its unreal.... what else can I do for her??? once she starts school I dont want her having any issues with anyone... you know how cruel kids can be.

Any suggestions would be great! Thank you

KC Mom

Just for me can be drying. Try mixed chicks. It is sold at more specialty stores. Try pulling her hair into a ponytail at night. Then in the morning spray on mixed chicks & then soke her hair down before fixing. If her hair is more of a full african american feel try going to the yahoo group called adoption haircare and skin care. It is for adopted parents but they do let of others join. It is a group of many moms only there to help answer hair & skin care questions about aa children. Hope this helps.

First, STOP with the detangler...it dries it out.
Second, go to mixedchicks.net and order their products.
Third, dont braid, with mixed children (and even not mixed), braiding causes breaks and hair loss.
With MixedChicks, you shampoo only about once a week. I "wash" (which I mean wet and condition) every other day. Use their Leave In Conditoner to comb out. REALLY saturate the hair with it...no frizziies...just beautiful curls.

I learned of this product off if this site about a year ago....I hope they never stop distrbuting it...it is what we live on!!!! (and once again, Thanks to Thea that turned me on to this product)

P., believe me...when you have mixed hair like that....Mixed Chicks is what will help.
BTW...I am no way, shape or form, affiliated with that company...I DO NOT make money from them, nor, have I ever worked for them, much less know anyone in the company.
It just happens to be the most awsome product for "mixed" children and adults out there.

P.S. be sure to do "dot net"...not "dot com'...."dot com" takes you to a not so nice place.

Hi KC Mom,

My daughter is also 4 and is mixed. She has the most beautiful thick full head of super curly hair. I absolutely love all the different hairstyles and looks I can do with her hair. I know there is a range of mixed hair that goes on the spectrum from almost all white hair to almost all black hair. So what works for one doesn't work for all.

One day I found this website that actually has a lot of great tips.
http://www.treasuredlocks.com/biracial-hair-care-guide.html

What works for me: I try to only wash my daughter's hair once a week (although that doesn't always work, especially in the summer we just can't wait that long). I really do try and use a wide tooth comb which will often feel rediculous because her hair is so tighly curly. I am constantly trying new products because different ones work better at different times (summer swimming, winter cold, humid days, bed head, ect). My daughter also loves to wiggle and anything I put on her head at night she will redo or loosen or remove, so I bought her a silk pillow case (I wanted a whole sheet set for her but those are expensive). But cotton and the normal fibers will break down and dry out her hair too much, and never do those thick winter sheets.

I have a diverse group of friends and have grown up learning about black and white hair. The biggest thing I find is that we all tend to think in terms of of our own hair type and hair expectations/norms. Mixed hair is neither. It is it's own type that is a combination of both races and has a huge range within that. Even your child's hair will transform with age. As girls hit puberty the hormones will often change their hair and as they leave those little baby locks their hair changes. My daughter gets compliments on her hair often and it is a great conversation point with other mommies who have passed their wisdom on to me.

I could go on and on (honestly). I really do enjoy the time I spend with my daughter and her hair. Please feel free to email me, I would love to have a momma to share hair stories and successes and failtures with. I would love to find out more about your daughter's hair type in the mixed spectrum and if it is like my daughter's then maybe we can swap hair styles.

First, you are washing it too much. She is half African-American and we don't have to wash our hair that often. Once a week should be suffice. Any more than that and you will wash out the natural oils that Black hair needs.

Just for Me is good, but not great. If her hair is soo dry you need to switch to something called Baby Love Hair Creme. It's thick enough to moisturize her hair (the Black part of her hair), but not too thick where it will make it oily (the Italian part of her hair).

After using that for a while and getting her hair used to it, you should then alternate between that and a product called Hawaiian Silky. It's a white bottle with green writing.

You can find both products at a Sally's or a Mid-K. Hope this helps :-)

I have curly hair and have found what I think is the best products. I use Mix Chicks http://www.mixedchicks.net/ . I do not wash my hair every day but I do condition it every day. I never brush my hair only comb it. Also some other ideas and help I have gotten was from a book called "Curly Girl" by Lorraine Massey There are tips on shampoo (never daily), conditioners (use lots), drying, combing (only when wet and well-conditioned), styling, getting the right cut.

My kids are biracial and we have issues with dry hair as well. I put a few drops of Proclaim Glossing Polish in their hair daily. It is very good at moisturizing and gives a nice healthy shine as well. We also use olive oil african american hair products before going to bed at night.

Good luck,

M

Wow! She sounds gorgeous! I agree that the mixed chicks line of products is awesome, but you have to order them online, I don't care for the scent and they aren't cheap.
Shea butter rubbed through her hair before bedtime or going to the beach will prevent moisture loss from rubbing or sun damage. Also - get her a silk or nylon pillowcase, cotton is too absorbent when the goal is to keep her hair moist.
Hair glosser on just the ends while it is still damp will also help.

Good Luck!

As a stylist, we used Potion 9 cream on wet hair from Sebastion on our clients with thick curly biracial hair, and deep conditioning treatments as well as needed. Put it in one simple very loose braid at night to keep it contained if needed, avoid the tight braids as they can break the hair.

How long is it? I would make it poofy and cute with the front pulled back in a bow, or little pigtails... .like this:

(lots of great advice here)

My daughter has curly fine hair, so a bit different than your daughter's but VERY much a problem. I too can only wash it a couple times a week and it is SUPER dry. She will have a tangled mess if I try to wash it more and it is impossible to comb through.

Needless to say, I have found that children's hair care products do not work on her. I can use the shampoo but need something a bit more heavy duty for the moisturizing. I started buying Aquage Leave In Conditioner. It is great because it is moisturizing enough to actually help detangle and it never gets greasy. I put it on every morning before we do her hair.

I know you said she won't let you braid it but I have found that if I do a pony tail or simple quicky braid before she goes to sleep at night, I won't have the massive tangles to brush out in the morning.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I would take her to an African American saloon. They can help you with certain product. I am also black/white. I use moister intense shampoo/conditioner and leave in conditioner. I wash my hair only once a week. If you need any additional advice please don't hesitate to ask.
