Hep B Shot

My son's doctor has been trying to give him the Hepititus B shot since he was 2 months old. But I had heard that it might just be a good idea to wait until he's a few years older for that shot and he doesn't neccesarily need it right now anyway. So I keep telling them not to give it to him that I want to wait on that. Today I took him in for his 6 month shots and again they ask me about it and I told the nurse, again, that I want to wait until he's older for that shot. Well, without me knowing it they gave it to him anyway. Luckily I needed a copy of his immunizations for his daycare, and I was looking at it on the way home and noticed he had recieved that shot today. I called the nurse and all she could say was sorry. I'm just mad because they went against my will. And the doctor never explains what shots he's getting, they just give you that handout. For some reason the nurse I told not give him that shot didn't make a note of it and another nurse came in and gave it to him. When have your babies gotten that shot? And should I have his doctor sign a form stating that they gave it to him against my will in case he has a bad reaction to it in the future? And for everyone's info, it was Dr. McIntosh at Cockrell/McIntosh. She seems to be a good dr. and I'm not blaming her, I'm blaming the nurse. Any thougths or input on this?

What can I do next?

I thought that the Dr. Sears vaccine book may help you. Google askDr. Sears I just got his book on vaccines and it is really good. I have a 2 and a half month old and I am doing an alternative vaccine schedule with her and they do have the hep b shot later. They get all there vaccines, but they are more spread out. Her first appt is April 22nd for her vaccines. I am going to make sure to get the lot # the manufature and what she is getting that day. I am sorry to hear that this happened to you. I would have them sign something advicing that they gave it without your will.

Wow. I'm sorry they did that. I really don't remember anymore how old my kids were. My oldest is 23 and I know she didn't have it at all until she was in highschool. I believe my 2nd daughter (21) also had it later in highschool. But my youngest 2 most like had it in the first couple rounds of shots.

I guess my only suggestion next time around is if you don't want a certain shot you should give them a letter in writing and ask them to keep it in your file and have them sign a copy that you can keep. These doctors act like they have all the power and you have none!

Just remember that the doctor is in charge of his nurses no matter what.

Hi S.,

I am so sorry to hear about their disregard for your request. That is disrespectful and not to mention wrong.

Right after I had my first son I started talking to my doctor about concerns with vaccinations. I let her know that I had every intention of getting all the vaccines but wanted to space them out and do it on my own terms. We talked over different ideas and she really took the time with me.

I guess what I am saying is make an appointment with your pediatrician and be in the "driver's seat" from the get go. Let him/her know what you want and how you want it done. You are the customer and that is YOUR baby. I let my pediatrician know that I respected their practice but it would be me to live with these decisions and I needed a doctor that would support me. She was awesome about it.

We go to the Lee's Summit Physicians group and our Dr. is Dr. DeWitt. She was genuine when we discussed all this.

You might check out a website that has a lot of resources for moms and tons of vaccine info. It is the Dr. Sears website. You can sign up for newsletters and such. These guys are always on Oprah talking about children's health. They have a spaced out vaccine plan too. Really Helpful.

Best of luck to you and your baby.
J.

PS - make and appointment and Let Them Have It!!

Hi S.. I am sorry to hear what happened. To answer one of your questions though, I have 3 children, 20, 14 and 5 months. My 14 year old got the Hep B shot when he was born. The first before we left the hospital and the other 2 at 6-8 weeks and last at 6 months, or something like that. I think they are required for school at around 12 or 13 so I had my oldest get hers while my little boy had his because it was easier that way. My 5 month old had one the day he was born and looking at his shot record he had them again at 2 months and 4 months. The shots are to help prevent Hepatitis B and I was fortunate that there were no reactions to the shot for any of my kids and my 5 month old was a preemie, just saying I think it is a safe enough shot. However, you need to do what you feel is best and I agree 100% with the other people that you need to be in charge and your Dr's need to follow your wishes, even if you have to repeat the same thing to anyone that comes in the examining room with you. Hope this helped a little and good luck.
