How Do You Lovely Long Locked Ladies Do It in This Heat??

Ladies- I have long hair just below my shoulder. It has a natural curl but I also flat iron as well. I will style my hair with all the intentions of wearing it down all day. Then I get out side and it literally takes me all of 2 minutes to want to pull it back because I am over heated or it's in my face. I see women all day long with their hair loose and they look fresh and lovely. What do you ladies do to not want to cut all your hair off the second the weather turns hot? I do not want to cut my hair. I await your sage advice.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for all your advice. I do put back my hair, pony tail it, twist it, pin it. I guess I was looking for the secret to wearing it down on a hot day. Now that I think of it the ladies I see wearing it down all day are walking the streets of NYC and maybe they are ducking in and out of the air conditioned stores and maybe they are younger than I seem to remember and childless and therefore can suffer for beauty. You all gave great advice and reminded me of some styles I have forgotten about. Enjoy the summer and if I solve the secret of these sleek haired divas I will share the wealth with you mommas!

I can't remember the last time I wore my hair down! Probably before my son was born 8 months ago. I wear it in a ponytail all day long, in fact, I even sleep with the elastic around my wrist so I don't have to search for it at 6 a.m. when my son wakes up. I don't really like just throwing myself together all the time, but with a 2 yr old and an 8 month old, I don't really have a choice. Plus, it is so hot and humid, it's not even worth the trouble. When I go out with my husband, which is rare, I keep my hair down.

Lol! I live in Texas. Yesterday it was over 100 degrees here. I went on a rant about chopping off my hair! But like the others said, pony tails. I also twist my hair up in a big barrette fairly often too. And if I am going to be outside for an extended period, you can about bet money I will be wearing a baseball cap, because the only thing worse than a sweaty neck and hair sticking everywhere is a sunburned part! Stay cool!

pony tail, pony tail, pony tail, and french braiding. as far as the front I keep it cut to where I dont really have to style it because of the humidity will make the curls fall out anyway. and I use round brushes on the front.

I wear pony tails or put it up in a clip....Mine is now about 2 inches below my shoulders as I just had 6 inches cut off 3wks ago....I wanted something lighter and shorter to get me through the summer months. Before that I always had it long in the summer and would sometimes put it up, but that was generally when I was home or we were out camping....

My hair is to the middle of my back and all I do to it is roll it with large hot rollers for about 5 minutes and then take them out. If I'm out in the heat and want it off of me, I will twist it into a bun or put it in a low ponytail. Lately, I've been wearing it in two braids. It's so simple and seems childish, but you would be amazed at how many compliments I get on my hair when I have it in braids! LOL Just this past weekend, I was grocery shopping and 3 women said, "your hair looks so cute!" My husband calls me Pipi Longstocking, but it's cool, comfortable and easy.........so Pipi I am!!! LOL

Anna,

At 48 I still wear my hear long, just below my shoulders. I too have a lot of natural curl. I'll tell you what I tell my 16 year old daughter, it took me 40 years to love and accept my curls, get used to it now!

Probably about 8-10 years ago, I found a fabulous hair stylist who cuts my hair in such a way that especially on hot-muggy days all I do is wash, scrunch and go. I do blow my bangs straighter, but DO NOT waste time using a flat iron! One it's not good for your hair and two, with curly hair in humidity it really doesn't do any good.
So after I blow my bangs dry and style those a little, I use either John Frieda Dream Curls (I get it at Target) or a Pantene product I can't remember off the top of my head. I spray it in, scrunch it up and let it go.

Trust me, accept it now. Find someone used to working with long curly hair and get a cut that will accentuate it. Then find a product you like to help develop and control your curls and life is good!

*Now having said all that, I do wear my hair up in a clip most of the summer because I don't like it on my neck when it's hot. But if we're going somewhere, I'll wear it down and do just what I described above.

Good Luck

I would try a headband - the elastic, sporty type that wraps around behind your ears. That keeps loose hair out of your face and off your ears so you don't feel the heat. It works for me without any sort of styling in the morning!

Most likely those women that look fresh and lovely do not have kids LOL! Mine is in a ponytail most of the time - summer or winter. I don't like my hair down with a turtle neck, its just too much around my neck. Other times I pull part of it back in a clip. My hair is so thick that I cannot wear it down - by the time it is dry it has grown ten fold and hugely frizzy (there isn't a product that can tame it, I have tried them all). So...ponytail holders and clips are my best friends :)

When my baby was about 6 months I had hair down to my butt. My boyfriend loved it, me, I wanted to shave my head. It was so flippin' hot! The back of my neck got all sweaty, and I just felt gross. I still have long hair, just not THAT long. Honestly I got lots of layers which thins out your hair quite a bit (takes the heaviness out of it), I also flat iron it, and I use a de-frizz syrum. When I get hot I twist t up in a clip. Then if I am going into a store I take it down, run my fingers through it, and I look like I have been styled all day. Sometimes it stays twisted up, and other days its down most of the time. I often wonder how girls with long hair can work out without pulling their hair back. I would just think it would drive me nuts. lol. You'll figure out what works best for you. Good Luck!

You see them... but you see them where and for how long? ;)

I have my hair twisted up and out of the way, or braided, or pinned, or clipped MOST of the time. Then as I step out of my car I pull the pin and shake it out before being "out and about".

Blown out straight my hair is past my bra... Curly it's brushing my shoulders.

I tend to go for curls in the summer in this area (humidity)... because I can wash it, throw in a "slow" gel (you know, the cheap ones that take forever to dry?), and walk around with wet hair pinned up for half the day (natural air conditioning). Then, when it's dry I can either wash it again... or let it go down and pin it out of my face. In the dry heat, I can go straight or curly. But in humidity/near the water... the curl comes 1/2 way back and my hair gets poofy because of the humidity AND my sweat. :P Irritating.

In the dry heat going straight my hair either gets headbanded back, or ponytail braid (think lara croft) or the double braid. Or if I plan on having it down at some point... I keep it twisted up and out of my way, and just "pull the pin".

I have girlfriends with naturally straight hair who can just walk around with their hair down and they look grand... but my natural curl won't do it. Not in this climate. I need 105 and higher (or 90s and 0 humidity), so that my sweat evaporates before it hits my skin surface if I'm going to have straight hair loose all day.

I use to do pony tails all the time, but it's almost too long for that now (it's past my bra strap and almost down to my behind), plus my hair would get tangled in the wind, get caught in the seat belt, etc. Loose hair gets damaged pretty quickly. Hair sticks are ok, and a French braid or Dutch underbraid looks nice, but I LOVE African Butterfly Hair Clips! It's easy and quick to do an updo, and the hair doesn't break or tangle. If you shop around, you can find some descent prices. $30 a piece is too expensive. I've found them for $15, and sometimes on a clearance sale for $10.
