Dawn, every time anyone asks about a grease based substance, dawn! There is a reason they save creatures with it.
Does anyone else do things that later make you go "WTH was I thinking??" Well, I was rushing to pack the car leaving my sister's place after a weekend with three kids along, trying to fit everything (sleeping bags, clothes, leftover food, etc.) in my 2-door VW Golf. I put (yes, I'll take the blame here) a 1/2 carton of butter, yes butter, in the glove compartment :-/ thinking (I guess) that not only would it be fine for the 3.5 hour drive home, but that I would REMEMBER to take it out when we got home. NO!
And, what were the car designers thinking when they lined the glove compartment with some type of soft material, instead of plastic (which would be relatively easy to clean). So, ideas anyone? What would you use to clean this? Thanks!
Sounds like Dawn is the easiest way to go! I'll give it a try. And, of course, next time I'll leave it behind. I have NO idea why I didn't this time. I'll blame it on the confusion of the moment after a long weekend with not enough sleep!

I am still trying to get past putting butter in a glove compartment. Can I ask
What possessed you to do that. Just curious.
I would scrub it up with dawn dish soap and hot water, then use a shop-vac ( or handle attachment to a carpet shampooer, if you have one) to suck it up. If you don't have access to either, just sop the water up the best you can with a towel, and leave the compartment open with the car windows down for air circulation until it is dry.
Some sort of de-greaser - maybe Dawn dish washing soap.
Wash it, rinse it and suck up moisture with a wet dry vac a few times.
If there's a similar next time either leave the butter behind or put it in a cooler with ice.

before trying the solvent, I would test it on an area that does not show to make certain that it doesn't take out the color-good luck!
Shaklee's Basic H will most likely take this out.
