Hi T.,
Try TURNING HEADS SALON in Harlem. You can look them up on the internet.
I live in North Bergen NJ and I need a new salon ASAP! My hair is a million different lengths, and I'm tired of wearing a ponytail because my hair is so uneven. I'm ready to go for the BIG CHOP and cut off all my hair, and go natural...but I think that is out of frustration...does anyone know of a salon?
Hi T.,

There's a very good salon between 97th Street and 98th Street on Park Avenue on the downtown side. It's called International. It's my aunts shop...she been there well over 15-20 years.
I know its my aunt...but
she's really good. There are people who have moved out of state and come at least once a month just to do their hair because she's done such a great job.
Her name is Nellie Western. Mine is Jennifer Santiago...hope it works out. Carman is her assistant that does just as fine of a job. She does my hair a lot.
Hairstyling by Joseph on 60th Street between Lex and Park - is terrific. They're currently under construction (so the decor is not great right now) but still serving clients and doing a great job.

Hi T.,
I'm not African-American, but I have super-curly, super-dry, frizzy hair - I've gone to Devachan down in SoHo and loved it. The woman who owns it, Lorraine Massey, literally wrote the book on curly hair (It's called Curly Girl) and has a number of products and tools to help with naturally curly hair. They have a couple of stylists who specialize in African-American hair. The only thing is, it's expensive$$$! I go only every once in a while when I'm making a big change (I cut all my hair off when my son was 6 mos old) or as a special treat.
Hope you find something that works for you!

I'm a black woman of a certain age! I understand how you feel b/c I also decided to go natural when my stylist of 15yrs left the area:(! Unfortunately, after the summer it was very difficult to maintain. Another girlfriend told me to try this salon and my hair is healthy, and I don't have to send $80-$90 dollars. If you want healthy hair, excellent trims and a christian atmosphere then this is a shop that I would highly recommend.
