Information on Outcome of Fetus with 2 Vessel Umbilical Cord

I just had my first ultrasound at 20 weeks and everything looked fine, other than they noted that there was a 2 vessel rather than a 3 vessel umbilical cord. The radiologist stated that I would need to have an echocardiogram in the next 2 weeks because there is a weak association between kidney and heart problems and this structure. Has anyone had any experience with this? What were the outcomes? Thanks!

Hi T.,
Well, my ultrasond never picked up the fact that my daughter only had a two cord vessel cord. She went to 30 weeks and had to have emergency c-section, but this was only because I was having other problems. She does have a hole in her atrial wall, but this could be due to the fact that she was born so early. But, I will tell you, try not to worry. Early detection is important and my daughter is now a very healthy three year old! Very active despite the hole. But you should take things easy and just keep monitored for any changes. I know of others who have had this situation and they have had a very healthy and safe pregnancy. Good luck!! and many blessing on your expected pregnancy.

Hi T.,

I had a two vessel umbilical cord also. My son has a minor kidney condition and they did tell me that there was a correlation. I went for non stress tests at the hospital after 32 weeks of pregnancy once a week. I carried to term and had a c section. All was fine. They did suggest that I eat more in my third trimester.

I had this diagnosed at my first ultrasound, was very scary for us, also had echocardiogram and other follow-up ultrasounds. Otherwise the pregnancy and delivery were uncomplicated and she was full-term. Thankfully our baby is healthy, with no heart or organ problems thus far. I wish the same for you, and less stress and worry.
