IUD? Doctor?

My hubby and I are thinking we're done having kids. I'd like to get an IUD because it's less permanent than sterilization but is hormone-free (I was thinking of getting the copper IUD). Wondering if anyone has any experience with these recently or has a recomendation of a gyn. who is really good at putting them in.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi M.-
I had the copper IUD inserted about 8 weeks after my daughter was born. I did not want to be on horomones and decided the IUD was the most effective option since you don't have to think about it after insertion. My periods were crampier and heavier for the first few months, but now they are pretty much back to the way they were before pregnancy. I had mine inserted by my midwife, Mary Kempf, at the HealthEast clinic in Woodbury, at Woodwinds Hospital - it was quick and relatively painless.

Hi M.-
I'd recommend Mirina. It's spendy, if your insurance doesn't cover it, but for me it was well worth it. I actually needed the low dose hormone because of very heavy periods and now 6 months after I got it, I have 1 day, liner only periods. I would recommend seeing Eidie, the nurse practicioner at Southdale OBGYN. I've found that nurse practicioners are not as rushed and are more thorough in their exams. (They ask more questions and review your history BEFORE offering advise.)

I have one and think it is terrific. i know it is not for everyone. I go to Southdale Obgyn in Burnsville. Many of the doctors there are great (Tweety or McKray are who I usually try to see. Also Edie and Michelle the CNP are great there to. I also have three children ages 10 almost 7
and almost 3. After my second child we were told we should be very careful about having a third child and that was when I had my first IUD. What a blessing to find out 4 years later that i probably wouldn't be at high risk at having another child. Therefore we had the IUD removed had our third child and again went back to the IUD. I am pretty sure we are done having children but decided we didn't want to do anything permanent until I reach my 40's.
Good luck with your decision!

I had a non-hormonal IUD for a few years... it was good except once I got pregnant and miscarried at 3 weeks.

And of course, IUDs do not protect against STDs (for those out there reading who might not know that).

I have the IUD you are thinking about getting. I have 3 boys and I feel that we are finished having children, but I know my husband is hoping I will change my mind. This seemed like a good compromise for now. Birth control pills always screwed me up hormonally, so for me, the IUD was a great solution. I go to ob/gyn associates in Burnsville, ###-###-####. Insurance did cover the IUD. Dr. Cho inserted the IUD. I've had it for 2 years now. To me, it did hurt when they put it in (cramping and such) but the pain does not last long. My period seemed heavier for several months after the IUD, but everything is great now. Light periods, very little cramping, and I'm protected without having to take a pill.
Hope this helps,
A.
