IUD Tubal or Hysterectomy

I have 5 kids ranging from 13 to 7 weeks. I know I don't want anymore kids. since this newest one was born I have had problems with a protruding uterus. I had been thinking about tubal but since this problem arose I am considering hysterectomy ...especially since my mother and grandmother both had hysterectomies for various reasons at a fairly young age. I mean if I am going to have more trouble in the future and don't want anymore kids then why go tubal and still deal with that time of the month. I already have to take a natural form of hormone replacement to control seizures and migraines so that is not an issue.

I had also thought of the IUD because it does not interfer with hormone levels and that is very important to me. I have tried the pill and condoms and depo and film...either had a reaction to the form or got PG. Only one child was planned but she is my worst child...the surprise babies are my best kids!

I don't know what to do...hubby is eager to get back to usual but I keep pushing him away because I don't want anymore babies and also the one time we did do anything it was very uncomfortable because of the uterus problem.

Anyone got any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I would say hysterectomy, I had a partial one 3 years ago and it has been great, I no longer have the issues I had with monthly visitors... and it was healthier... you are eventually going to have to have it done, go ahead and get it over with the recovery time is not like it was in the olden days you will be up and moving before you know it.

I do hope this helps.

Hi, my name is K. and I am having the same problems as you are. I work at a womens clinic and have been told the same news from my doctor. I have two children who are 3 and 1 years of age. My husband and I are trying for a third at this time and then that will be it. I would definatly have the hysterectomy over anything else if possible, you are right, why would you want to worry about other things when you could get it all done at once and be done with it. Enjoy those children and good luck.

Talk to your doctor about endometrial ablation. I had this procedure done after my GYN suggested it. I also have 5 children and was finished with having children. The doctor goes in vaginally, checks the strength of the endometrial walls and if they are strong enough, burns the blood vessels. You shouldn't have a period again and if you do, it is very light. It is a very easy procedure and my recovery time was a breeze plus I had some other work done while he was there. I was eligible to go back to work in 2 weeks, mainly due to the other work I had done.

Hi H. I am a Surgial Tech and I work in the Operating Rooms with several OB GYN's and do the kinds of surgery's you are inquiring about. I know just from my experience that the uterine prolapse that your talking about only get's worse. Of course an IUD would help with the fertility issue but not the uterine. I would sugguest the hysterectomy especially since you are already on horomone replacements. The Uterine prolapse can get so bad as if your actually sitting on it when you sit down, not very sexy for the bedroom.

H.,
After seeing my sister have twins during her fourth pregnancy, after my 3rd child, my husband and I decided not to have any more children. The "back to usual" is one of my husband's hangups...while I was going through the acts, he could tell I was unhappy and not totally into it as he was. I told him that everytime we had sex I was worried about becoming pregnant. After he started looking at it like that, HE was the one that suggested having a Vasectomy. It was a weekend thing. The day surgery was Friday, with strict doctor orders for ice packs and recliner sleep. I kept dosing him with pain killers and after about 4-5 days, he was fine. The only thing is...make sure you have protection for the following 3 MONTHS! Then return his semen sample after that to make sure it the connection did not reestablish itsself. A year later, he enjoys it more and I enjoy it much more. I don't have to worry about mood swings, hormone levels, NOR do I have to worry about getting pregnant. PS. If you or your husband DO decide to have more children...a vasectomy is easier and cheaper to reverse!!!

Hope this helps,
M.

Will they actually do a hysterectomy on you? I have the same problem. I had stress urinary incontinence, and a uterine prolapse, and I had to go to the urologist and literally beg in tears for him to fix the incontinence issue, had already tried drugs and kegal therapy, and after 3 years it was only getting worse. They won't even talk to me about the prolapse and I am furious. It is my body, I turn 29 this year and do not want anymore children. I have 3 children from 2 complicated pregnancies (I had twins). I just want to feel "normal" again.

I would def go the hysterectomy route, but that is just me. You do what you feel is best. I would also add I had the 10 year non-horemonal IUD and loved it but after 18 months I had an allergic reaction and my body started rejecting it and I had to have it removed.

personally i would follow the doctors order.I have a sister that had partial of her uterus removed , because she had cervical cancer. She was only 28 yrs. old.She got three beautiful boys.About 2 yrs. ago she found out that the cancer came back, she fought the battle of cancer for six years.come to find out that the tube they had remove wasn't the one that had a mase on it that it was her right tube instead of her left one. They gave her a short time to live.Automatically i got scared this is my only sister , and it is only her, and i. They told her it was important for her to have the full hysterectomy, but at a young age she was unsure if she wanted to go threw with it.She probaly would want more kids in the future. We have always been the best of friends, threw her time in Med. school, threw her pregnancy, i have always been there , and i wasn't about to let her give up.So we decided to get another opinon we are awaiting the results. After all that she found time to complete her degree at Bethel College in South Bend ,Indiana. She is now working at Elkhart General Hospital as a nurse practision.I hope this information help you a little.

I am also going through the uterine prolapse thing and I'm going to have a hysto soon. I am 25 and have 3 kids and had a tubal after my last one so it makes sense for me to have it done and sounds like it for you too. I researched it all over the net and talked to different drs before I decided. Gaining knowledge is the best thing you can do for yourself. Everything I have read tells me that a prolapse isn't life threatening but it will only get worse. And there is no time frame for that to happen. Could be today or 20 years from now. And its been my expierience so far that sex isn't going to get any easier either. I found www.hystersisters.com and they have more info and support than anything I found on the web and they will discuss things with you that your doctor may not think about. I was also thinking about how it will just get worse and there is no point in making myself suffer any longer with periods and things like that. And you can leave your ovaries if you choose so you don't start medical menopause. But thats my opinion. I hope it goes well for you. Good luck! Remember only you can make the right decision for you.

I had a tubal with my last child at age 24. I then had a hysterectomy at 38 due to some difficulties. I loved not having to worry about periods; I was placed on hormones as I had decided that they might as well take the ovaries so that I didn't have to worry about ovarian cancer.
Having the ovaries removed was the worst mistake I have ever made. I ended up developing a bolld clot so I had to go off of my hormones. I have not had one single full nights sleep since. It threw me into full blown menopause.
Basically what I would suggest is to have a partial hysterectomy and KEEP THE OVARIES at all cost.

I can reccommend the IUD, Mirena, however I know diddly squat about the other two from personal experience. The Mirena took me a little while to get used to, actually after my son was born I took two pregnancy tests because in combo with nursing and the IUD I stopped having periods. Here nine months later and I still haven't had one. What better rec. can I give?!

Have you discussed with your dr? Have you had an exam done? Most drs won't do a hyst "just because you want one", they will only do one for complication. Also, most insurances will not pay for one without an indication. If you have an indicaiton (from a drs exam and opinion), you are done having kids, then go for it. If none of the above apply, then IUD (paragard does not use hormones - mirena does) or tubal are both great options. Your best bet if you haven't done so already is to discuss all your options with your dr.

I had a protruding uterus also and I was in alot of pain durring intercorse. Not to mention that time of the month when I could barley crawl accross the living room floor. I have 2 kids, 12 and 6. I love them dearly and decided not to have any more. As they grow, I am starting to have time for me. My doctor told me I had to have surgery to tack the uterus back up. When I told him I wanted him to tie my tubes while he was in there, he said to think about having a hysertectomy instead. He said if I tack it up then 5 years down the road I will probibly have to do it again. I decided on the hysterectomy. (they left the ovaries so I don't need any hormones)
It was the best decision ever!!!!
The recovery was not bad at all. I was in the hospital one night, home the next day, and back on my feet in a week. I was suposed to sit for 2 weeks but I was restless. It has been a year now and I have no periods, cramps, or pain. The best part is that sex is better than it ever was!
I would defenatly recomend it!

You really need to have a long talk with your DR.they should have given you some good advice.I had the same problem.I also have 5 kids,my problems became worse over time as my uterus became folded over my bladder. There is the partial hysterectomy where they only remove your uterus and leave your ovaries.I know you said you take hormones now but keeping what you have is always better if it is possible. Also it sounds like you have other health issues that would make another pregnancy hard.I had my partial hysterectomy over seven years ago and have never been healthier.I feel soo much better. Also my husband says our sex life is better since I don't have too worry about getting PG anymore. Talk to your DR he may agree. Good luck L.

Hi H.,
I can understand your concerns quite well. I am 48 and the mother of five ages 20(twins), 21, 24, 26. After the twins were born I was having LOTS of trouble with pain and bleeding. I put off doing anything about it for two years until it was unbearable. Mostly because psychologically for me having a hysterectomy was "not being a woman anymore". I was so glad I went ahead with the hysterctomy, I was 31 at the time and five was enough. I was able to get on with taking care of myself, my husband and the children God had given us. Also I have not missed that monthly time in the least. Hope that helps.

I think you should talk with your doctor about getting a hysterectomy and leave your ovaries intact. I am a nurse and I have had this done. It was the best thing I could have done. By leaving the ovaries in you shouldn't need hormone replacement therapy. I hope this helps. If you have anymore questions that I may help you with just let me know. Mary

It's your man's responisibility! He must "control" himself. Many men are able to do this and enjoy themselves even more. It has to do with strengthening the muscles that control...well, you know. My husband has been doing this for so long I don't think I could get pregnant again if I wanted to! A woman's body is so amazingly complicated. Don't make things worse by birth control and other terribly altering chemicals and surgerys! The man has the "God given" right of being in control of the household...that means controlling his baby making fluids as well! Good luck!

when they do a hyterectomy they can just take the uterus. And since the protusion could get bad enough that you'd have to have a hysterectomy anyway, you might think about doing it now. It's your ovaries that control the hormones in your body, so not much should change there.

Your uterus is a very important part of your body, and serves many purposes. Yes monthly periods are uncomfortable, but many problems can occur after a hysterectomy because of the hormone changes, that hormone replacement therapy cannot duplicate. Hormone replacement therapy can also predispose you to various cancers. Many personality changes occur after hysterectomy also,as well as vaginal dryness, and so many others. Please research your decision, as it is serious to decide on a hysterectomy for convenience sake. It would be better to preserve the uterus and have the ligaments that suspend it tightened surgically than to remove it and cause more problems. It IS a NECESSARY organ. You could have alot more problems with a hysterectomy than just monthly periods cause. It may seem to be easier but it is not. Sincerely,

I'm not sure if this will help or hurt your uterus problem, but I am getting ready to replace my first IUD. I had it placed after my son was born in 2002, and have loved it!!!! No cramps! Minimal, if any, bleeding (some months without a sign of any kind). If I do have an increase in moodiness, it is mild because I can't tell and haven't gotten feedback that anything changes. And I haven't noticed any other side effects.

I had 2 children via csection, and had a partial hysterectomy at 27 years old. Have you considered that option? In a partial hysterectomy you keep your ovaries so you don't go through menopause until the natural time. You don't have periods and you can't get pregnant.

I still feel a little hormonal feelings sometimes but nowhere near the same as when I had a period. I had to have the hysterectomy because I had severe endometriosis but I think it was the right choice for me, versus a full one.

You are the only one who will have to live with the choice so make the best one for you.

I had a hysterectomy in my mid 39's & it was the best thing
I could have done. Even my general health improved.
I asked the Dr. to leave the ovaries if they were healthy.
That way you can avoid hormone replacement therapy.
At the same time I had the Dr. tightne up my bladder because I had the problem of leakage when I laughed or coughed.
Pray about these things.
The surgery was done vaginally.
I was home in a couple of days.
And recovery was about a week. The Dr. Will tell you when you can resume a normal life w/ your hubby.

Get the Hysterectomy. I was alittle older 45, but having multiple problems. I didnt know how bad I felt until after I had my surgery. A protruding uterus doesnt go away and will continue to cause problems along the way. If you are thru having kids and with the protruding uterus you are just putting off the inevitable by trying other options. Im not sure how well an IUD will be w/your prob. They work great but are not for everybody. I think you will feel so much better to get it out and not have the discomfort and the worry.

Few years later I had a hysterectomy. I should have had the hysterectomy first. I had a vaginal hysterectomy. left the overies, I did not have to have hormone replacement for several years after the surgery. I was 36. If your sure about no more babies i would sugest the hysterectomy, don't put your self thgrough years of suffering if you don't have too. Besides its nice not having periods...Good luck. C.

I really feel for you in your current situation. I have been there myself. After my last child, five years ago I started having periods ALL the time. After numerous DNC's and medication that was suppose to help with the bleeding. I voted for hysterectomy. This was the BEST thing I have ever done for myself. I love it, although it does have it's negative sides also. Some of the after affects for me have been lower sex drive, hot flashes and some mood swings. But I still feel as though I made the best decision for me. Each woman is different, just be really, really sure that you don't want anymore children, because before my hysterectomy I knew that I did not want anymore children but, there are sometimes now that I feel that I do. This may be due to just plain temporary insanity!!!! But other than that, it's worked out great. I hope I might have helped with this big decision you are now facing in your life.
