JFF- Do You Still Own Mixed Tapes from an X over a Decade Old ?

Am I dating myself? Anyways I was cleaning out a drawer as I just got new furniture for my bedroom. I threw everything from this dresser into a box and have not actually gone through it all, but did notice a mixed tape that I could not bring myself to toss last time I cleaned out my drawers. But today, without hesitation, I picked it up, showed it to my husband and said "watch this". He was not aware that I owned it, but knew of course what it was. And I plopped it in the trash and we both laughed. Was is that i have no way of playing this cassette tape? or that every last lingering feeling is gone 13 years later? Or that new furniture (and a new house for that matter), makes me want to unload. Probably all the above, but I'm not really sure. So do you harbor any decade old mixed tapes?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This was a post break-up specific tape, so listening to it again just seemed wrong.

Yup. I've got the mixed tapes (and albums recorded off the radio or vinyl onto audio tapes) from high school and college, so 1981 through 1987 or so. I think I've got you beat on the dating myself, with the vinyl reference :). Those old tapes are great memories for me, and we still have lots of audio tape players, including one in the car from 2002, so my kids have had the opportunity to listen to that ole 50s mixed tape made by my dear college friend. Some of the tapes are from exes, however lots of them were made by friends or myself. Memory lane is a good place to visit.

I do not, but I have a question for you... If you have a mixed tape... And enjoy listening to all of the songs on said tape... Why do you have to throw it away just because an ex gave it to you? I'd still be thinking 'Free songs! Score!'. Lol

Unfortunately, I have a few boxes of mixed tapes over two decades old-a few from exes! And stacks of CDs a decade old-ish :( Just haven't gotten to the attic to purge yet-you go, girl! Actually, I have a cheap little boom box in my studio that plays tapes, and some new ones still have tape players....:)

I still own a VCR. I keep it in the den. I will never trade in my excercise video tapes. I enjoy having an "old" gadget in the house !

The video tapes I do not use anymore--I found a place to recycle them.

Sure do!! I have a few special ones my husband made for me when we were dating even. I had a friend that was a DJ that shared all sorts of rare stuff with me. I have been meaning to burn some of them to CD because you can't get what's on them. We bought the coolest stereo at Bed Bath and Beyond that looks like an antique radio with a turntable, Cassette player, radio and CD player that is also a burner.
We were just talking about this to the kids because we were watching "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" which is set in the 80s.
We're music junkies in my family ;)

i think cassettes sound better than cds. we also have a pretty extensive album collection.
and my 2007 car has a cassette player AND a cd player!
which is great because my brother is the king of mixes. he has made several for me, combining old favorites from the 70s and 80s with some stuff he thought i might like. and he's almost always right. (he is also way better at picking clothes for me than i am. and yes, he is. ;) )
so decade-old stuff is still newfangled to me. my music development stopped when my boys got old enough to drive and i was no longer inundated with 'mom! you need to hear lacuna coil! you're going to LOVE this!'

LOL!!! I have mix tapes that are over 20 years old...they're not from an ex, just from my college days. You've inspired me to pull them out and take a walk down memory lane.

Yup, a shoebox full. Such memories! Even if I never play them again, just looking at the hand decorated or handwritten track lists brings back such nostalgia.

I had a car in 2002 that still had a tape deck in it, and I had a lot of my mix tapes from the 90's in there. I got in a car accident and flipped my car on the freeway. Scary, but I was fine, my car was totalled and everything in it scattered. My husband (just my bf at that time) drove back to the site the next day and picked every single one of my precious mix tapes out of the bushes in the embankment. There is one he didn't find but I still have the rainbow coded case with the list of songs on it. I was so grateful. I loved my music and my mixes back then!

So, no. I'm not ever throwing those away. :)

I have some in storage in the garage. I kept ones my pen pal in Sweden sent to me. Many contain groups that were big in Europe before they got famous here, too (Wham, for instance). They're about 30 years old at this point! I don't have any way to play them, but keep them because they have personal meaning to me.

Nah, but I have always been the clean break type. Like too much, I broke up with a guy I dated for three years and thought I was going to marry, I threw out every picture that same night and packed up all his stuff in a box plus everything he ever gave me and took it to him the next day, yikes!!! Pissed off much??? So, nope, no mixed tapes have survived....lol!

I come accross some every now and then. No way to play them though.

I've converted a couple old cassette mix tapes to CDs and MP3s.
