My 8 year old daughter has kidney stones. Does anyone else have a child with kidney stones? I would just like to talk with other parents about treatments, diet, etc..

What can I do next?

Hi B.! I feel so bad for your daughter as I have had stones for 11 years now. They started when I was 16. When I went to the hospital for them they recommended that I see a urologist. The doctor was able to grab a stone by a type of procedure called a cystoscope(sp). From that point he was able to determine what type of stone I was producing. For me personally it was due to increased calcium production. The best solution is increase the fluid intake. Try to limit sodas and teas but you do not have to cut them out of the diet completely. Everything in moderation. B. also don't let them ever do a surgery that they have to cut your daughter if she ever produces another stone!! They have the cystoscope procedure and lithotripsy that will break up the stone without cutting. Just keep telling her to drink that water, and let's hope it solves the problem :)

My daughter had kidney stones from the day she was born....VERY rare. She has had a number of surgeries, and we feel like we know tons about how to deal. I am not sure what questions you may have, but I would be very happy to share anything I may know or have gone through.

Kidney stones come in many form and are made of different types of matter. Some can be semi-controlled by diet, but one type needs immediate attention ....some cause severe pain, some go unnoticed. My daughter is on a medicine called Diuril that is a dieretic which helps to flush out her kidneys, being that she is so young and may not always remember to drink lots of water. Also, you would think to cut back on milk (calcium) but though it seems counter-intuitive, her urologist said that milk actually helps - I am not 100% sure how though.I am assuming you have already talked to your dr. about this.
Hope this helps and Again, please feel free to e-mail me if you like!

Kidney stones are the hardest to deal with. I personally have never had them but my boyfriend has had to deal with them for years now. The doctor tells him everytime (at least everyother year) to cut back on fried foods, calcium intake, and caffinated products such as tea and soda. I dont know how well that will work for her. I know it does nothing for him. But if u need any more advice feel free to ask. God Bless and Good luck.

I am an adult with kidney stones. They say if you drink cola or tea you are more suseptible to getting them. I drink mostly lemonade now. That breaks them down. I had laser surgery and it didn't get the stone. It was too big. I just recently went into the hospital and they put a small incision in my back with a tube and got all of them. Nip it in the bud now before they get any bigger. They are very painful and i hear they are hereditary.

Ouch!! I feel for your daughter. They are so painful. I didn't have kidney stones as a child but had one bout when I was in college. My doctor recommended drinking more water, going to the bathroom more often and decreasing the amount of soda I was drinking. I never had them a second time.

The best thing you can do is limit her soda intake. I'm sure you have heard this so many times that you are exp. nausea. Lots of water is what we would reccomend when I worked on the surgical floor. I also remember hearing a surgeon say they were on the rise in kids due to the increased consumption of soda. www.livegreeneasy.com

absolutely no soda and drink lots of water. my child does not have them but my husband does. there are many different kinds but there are certain things you should not eat or drink. the doctor gave him a list of things he should eat and drink and what he should not. it is called a low oxalate meal plan. for drink apple juice, grapefruit juice, lemonade is okay. look it up online, i am sure you can find some information about this type of diet. i am suprised the doctor did not refer her to a urologist or talk about diet.

My husband has kidney stones, so we limit the amount of salt in the foods we eat. Since your kidneys are affected by your salt intake, limiting salt helps them to work more efficiently. Hope your daughter feels better.
