Is there an alternative to writing your kids name directly on it with a sharpie and ruining any chance of consigning it?

What can I do next?

I oredered labels from namebubbles.com and they are awesome. they last through dishwashing or laundry (depending on which labels you get)....but you can also peel them off when done.

I make my own labels from white ribbon, write on with Sharpie and sew to regular labels. I then cut them out when it's time to hand down or sell...

I ordered labels from Labeldaddy.com and have labeled everything my children use and wear. When I passed a plastic formula holder on to a friend, she had no trouble taking the label off -- and this was after 2 yrs and numerous times in the dishwasher. I highly recommend them. They come off clothes as well. I haven't purposely take them off, but they have pulled off a few items (once again, after numerous washings)

Hi. Try Mables Labels. This is a wonderful company out of canada. I have been using their stuff for years. The company has expanded from a very small mom centered place to a wonderfully successful mid sized business. They even have stickers good for shoes and stickers that even stay on in the dish washer - for lunch stuff. good luck.

Go to Joann fabrics or ac moore and see if they have labels that you can put in the clothes. I think they sell some that you can write on and sew into the clothes. That way before you consign it you can cut the label out of the clothes. I know I do not like buying clothes or toys second hand with names written on it.

I use clear tape and write on it with a sharpie. The tape comes off really easily.

I've purchased labels from a few different places but I'm a fan of labels from Stuck On You (www.stuckonyou.biz). You do need to be careful what you get as their iron-on labels really do fuse with the garment and are near impossible to remove. However, I've discovered their stick on clothing labels & LOVE them. You just peel them off & stick them to the tags of the clothes. They also stay on the tagless clothing (but not forever). You can still iron them too if you prefer (or even sew as they provide instructions).

How about something like Mabel's Labels (or something similar to them)?
http://www.mabel.ca/

They have all sorts of different ones - from iron-on ones for clothing to sticky labels that you could peel off (or even scrub-off if you had to) later if/when you want to resell something...

Good luck!

The label responses below are great. I just wanted to add that the consignment stores I shop at do still take clothing that has names written on the tags. I myself have bought clothing with names written on the tags because it doesn't bother me at all.

With plastic toys I used different color nail polish for each kid. It comes right off with polish remover.

with hard items and toys, use a label maker or write on tape... for clothes use a sharpie and write on a little piece of fabric, and sew the ends to the clothes (like another tag) then you can use a seam-ripper to get it off when you are done.

Go to Walmart, Hancock Fabrics, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, any where crafters buy supplies for sewing and find "sew in labels" for homemade gifts, they might say..."Made with Love by Grandma" or something like that. You can write on them with a Sharpie then just sew by hand and label them that way. It doesn't take more than just a stitch or two to keep it secured. it can be in the seam under the arm, in the tail of a shirt, anywhere inconspicuous. It would just take a simple snip to remove it too.

(Sharpie does wear off so check the label occasionally, you can remove it a rewrite the name then stitch it back in)
