Hello Ladies,

I am scheduled to have a LAVH (Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy), and I was wondering if any of you have had this done and what your recovery was like. I am a little nervous about having this done, but i am looking forward to no more periods and not having to worry about birth control anymore. Any and all experiences are welcome. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Hi K., I had this done 2 years ago at Trinity med center in carrollton, after the first day, I felt wonderful. Hardly any pain at all, just a little sore. I went back to work after 3 weeks, just no lifting and felt wonderful. Good luck hope you have a great experience like I did.

Best thing I ever did! I wish I had done it much sooner than I did. Recovery was better than expected. I had it done on Thursday a.m., was home by Friday afternoon and was up and around that night when friends stopped by to check on me. I had a little bit of pain but it was not bad at all. I was fine, if a little tired, by Monday.

I had to have everything taken out and it has been great. No hormones to deal with, just a few hot flashes but those have been manageable.

I hope it goes as well for you as it did for me. Good luck!

Hello K.,
There are many other procedures out there that will give you what your looking for. Like the Novasure or the ThermaChoice. Please do you research before having any and all procedures. It is YOUR body.

I had this procedure almost two years ago. The procedure went well except for the fact I had back problems going into the surgery that we didn't prepare for. Due to the position that you are kept in while the procedure is taking place I came out and could hardly walk for almost two weeks. This made my recovery very uncomfortable.

I had the procedure done a year ago and it was the best thing. The recovery was a piece of cake. Just watch the lifting and don't overdo it. Are you having a bladder lift as well? I would recommend it since once they remove everything the bladder tends to fall and I didn't want to have to have another procedure later on to remedy that. Are they going to keep your ovaries? Opt for that too. Then there are no hormones to take.

I'm not sure what your situation is, but I saw on Dr. Oz that this is the most common, unnecessary procedure (especially if the reason is for fibroids, but he said just in general too). So really dig deep, do your own research if you can and make sure it's really in your best interest. Drs are almost always quick to make decisions because it's easiest (and, hate to say it, they get paid more too for the bigger procedures). Anyways, good luck if you have to have one. My mom had one 15 years or so ago and she said it wasn't a big deal, healed pretty quick and no problems afterwards...

I have not had this procedure done, but am a nurse who works on a women's unit and takes care of these patients all the time. Usually it is an overnight stay and recovery time takes the same as an abdominal hysterectomy minus the incision; but it is still major surgery. You will be able to get up, walk, and shower as normal but will need extra rest. Doctors usually recommend 6 weeks of rest; just like if you had had a baby. So get ready to relax and take it easy!! Good luck to you!!

I had one two years ago and it has been wonderful every since. I also had a bladder lift and a pelvic reconstruction with the LAVH, so my surgery was a bit more than just the hysterectomy.

Recovery was uncomfortable at first, but really wasn't that bad. My doctor gave me a pain ball in the hospital which contolled the pain very well until it wore off. Once it wore off, it hurt, but they got the pain under control with other medication. The first couple of days home were a blur thanks to the pain meds. But I was controlling any discomfort I had with ibuprofin at a little over a week after the surgery (after a week the dr. said I could drive once I was off the meds).

After about 2-3 weeks I didn't need anything for the pain for the day but I tool ibuprofin at night since I was a bit sore and it helped me sleep. Oh yeah, I also got tired very easily after the surgery. I really didn't get my full energy back until about 6 months after the surgery. After talking to other women who have had it done, they pretty much had the same experience. After that, I have felt better than I have in a very long time.

I think the hardest part of the whole thing was watching what I lifted during the 6 weeks after the surgery. My boys were 3 and 5 at the time, so even though I didn't have a baby I still was taking care of them and doing the daily chores best I could.

I was nervous about the procedure also. I was more worried about the effects after the surgery than the procedure itself. I was worried about my sex-drive, hormones (I had a complete hysterectomy) and even if I would feel feminine afterwards. I have no problems in any of these areas. I had a lot of pain before the surgery, so having sex is now more comfortable and enjoyable. I love my patch for hormones and being free from PMS, etc. I feel the same, just better now and the freedom from periods is great!! For me, the hyterectomy was the best thing I've done. The recovery may be a little painful at times, but it goes by fast and is well worth the end-product!

Good luck!

Hi K.,

Please research this. My mom had one and later died from ovarian cancer. The LAVH is less invasive and recovery time is less, but the problem is, they can't see as well as when they do a regular Hysterectomy where they open you up. They left just one tiny piece of one ovary(we're talking smaller than a pinhead).

When you have a regular "H", you don't feel good from the incision, so you don't push to do things. With the LAVH, you feel so good after a few days, you forget you've still had major surgery and your insides need to heal.

I had a choice and I opted for the regular. I didn't want to chance the other.

I'm sure they've improved things a lot, but I wasn't going to take a chance.

Whatever you decide, Good luck!
