I always got great advices from you moms so here I am again. My 9 year old son is a a big fan of legos. His room is cramped with lego everywhere, which makes cleaning impossible. It's always a drama when I try to vacuum and dust the few square inches available and break his things by mistake. I thought of installing some kind of shelf so he can play and put off the ground his assemblied legos. I don't have any design in mind and would love to hear from resourceful moms out there.

Thanks!

My favorite display solution is a 6 inch wide shelf that runs all the way around the room, about 10 inches down from the ceiling. We use it to keep stuffed animals, models, lego creations etc. For storage we did try the 9 bin units, but the boys just didn't tidy up, so we switched to a large rubbermaid container with an attached lid. My boys are more happy to clear up when they don't have to sort pieces, so it works for us. Good luck!

depending on the size of your son's bedroom, take a couple of old wooden doors and secure them to the bedroom walls like a table. if you have an extra bedroom or large den area, you could do the same thing. enjoy.

I bought one of those wooden storage bins at Target (actually two) They have these Square Cube fabric holders that fill up the whole square. Each unit has about 12 holes and containers to put stuff in. You can choose your color (s) to amtch your room decor. They can stand up tall or lay them down flat or on top of each other. I then printed out and lamaneted what was inside and stitched on the front or you coult tack a piece of leggos on front to show him what is inside. As with any type of bin and children they will have to be cleaned out and sorted every few months...I watched their sale paper and they will go on sale to get a cheaper price. We also purchased Container store shelving for one wall and I made a curtain to cover front and he puts all other stuff behind there and dosen't look so messy...

Oh my gosh, I am in the same exact boat. My son's assembled lego sets have now taken over 2 rooms of the house! Not sure how many you have, but we started off with a multi-shelf TV stand then added a shelved side table. That wasn't enhough, now the legos are stacked all over his dressers so I am looking into varied-spaced shelves. I do like the idea of the long shelf near the ceiling that someone posted - a little out of the direct visual impact.

I bought some of those cheap book case closet organizers and painted them. Now know this that first you must spray them with a primer which is ususlly grey or black then your color I left the shelves out and hung them sideways up on the wall. I use them to put dvd's in and then things he should not touch on them like display shelves. We bought fabric for his decor and spring curtain rods and put small hem on each side and put them up in the inside to cover the dvd's

You are a better mom than I am! If I was having this problem, I would probably just stop vacuuming the room!

I got the most wonderful cart for our Legos at Container store. It stacks, has big handles and stores easily. It's clear with a lid and I could separate, people and specific sets. AWESOME. We've had it for years and they LOVE it.

Our son was given 3 huge storage boxes of Legos when my dad moved out of his house a couple of years ago and when we looked at the mess we had with his other Legos, we decided on getting him one of those 12 bin organizers (do a search in google for kids storage bin, I know Target has them on line and I think I even saw them at Home Depot)...it has been the best thing...now, he hasn't gotten into the large creations yet, but the small cars that he makes fit perfectly in the bins when it is time to clean up (and the pieces being seperated into the different sized parts allows him to see what he has, such as his peoples (as he calls them) in one, the trees, horses, etc., in one, the car parts in one, etc. etc.) If he wants a place to store his larger creations we can build him a shelf to display them on. I hope this info helps some....to me, it has been the best inexpensive investment for his Legos possible.

My son is the same way.We installed shelves all over his room - he has no wall space left. But with the money he and I have invested it is worth it - plus it his room, not mine! The wooden shelves and fabric squares others have mentioned will not work with the odd shapes and sizes of the legos. Good luck!

We keep our legos in a large rubbermaid storage bin. It's big enough that projects in the making can be put back in it. The lid can also be used to display finished projects. I also have made the rule that any legos left on the floor are fair game for me to throw in the trash. That motivates my little ones to pick things up. I warn them before I vacuum that I'm no my way.

We love legos too. My husband and son are fantastic builders. We have numerous sets of Star Wars and Indiana Jones. We purchased a book shelf for the ones that are but together and are up to look at, seldom play with. For the extras we bought a tub/bucket with a lid that snaps on so the little pieces have a place and not on the floor. Dusting is a trick as well. I recommend the canned air. You can get it a WalMart or office supply store. That helps spray the dust away.

Each time we have moved to a new home, my husband and I install a wooden shelf above the door of our child's bedroom. When you are standing in the doorway you really can't see the shelf, so the toys/momentos are out of the way, protected, and cuts down on the visible "clutter." We put sports trophies, special toys, etc. on the shelf. When you have guests and you are "showing" your home, they stand in the doorway and never see the shelf and the "clutter." My husband is handy (!) so he has every tool under the sun. We buy an inexpensive wooden board that is 12" deep and he routes (sp?) the edges for a decorative look. We buy the premade heavy duty wooden brackets, paint the shelf and brackets, and install. We would clean/dust 3-4 times a year (ugh!) and if our child told us that they wanted to get something down, they knew that only a parent could climb the ladder to get it down. Good luck!

Go to Container Store and look! They create a rolling table there from their Elfa products with slide-out bins underneath to house Legos! Kids roll them around to play and then build on the board ... the slide-out bins have stoppers so they do not slide all the way out, cutting out most of the "dump them all out" spills. The bins can be sectioned to hold different types of parts ... depends on the organizational skills and needs of the user child. I have had one in my home for years and have set up grandsons with a Lego table of their very own at their request!

Container Store also sells clear shoe boxes ... a less expensive solution but good because the youngster can still organize his Legos and can see what he is reaching for. Those can stack just like shoeboxes do on a shelf.

Happy Building! Grandma GiGi

I don't have any great solutions for the play space or display, but a table of some kind that is off the floor will make it easier to vacuum the room. My boys are 14 and 10 and still like to play with Legos, especially in the summer. They usually take over my dining room table! We keep all of their Legos in various sizes of plastic storage bins and try to keep the lids on to keep out the dust. One thing I have found to help dust the displayed finished stuff, is to use the canned air like you use for a computer. It works great!
