Long Underwear for Babies??

Hi there! This is my first winter in Chicago with a baby who will be going outside. My daughter is 11 months old, and I don't know what you're supposed to put on babies to take them out when it's cold outside. I feel like we're fine with layering for her top half, with onesies, shirts, sweaters, etc., but what about her legs? There is always a big gap between her pants and her shoes, exposing her calves, whenever she sits down, no matter what pants she is wearing, so I'm wondering if there's some kind of long underwear that babies/toddlers should wear, or am I just supposed to put a snowsuit over it? And do you always take the kids' shoes off before putting on a snowsuit?? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your great ideas! I am going this week to get her some sweater tights-it sounds like those will work out great.

I know if you are looking for long underware I saw some at WalMart. As far as a snowsuit, I only put that on my kids if they are going to play in the snow. Otherwise it's too big and bulky. We always out the snowsuit on fist and then shoes/boots. I know this sounds wierd, but I've left my kids jammies on (the ones with footies) before, to help keep warm.

tight would protect your baby between the shoe and the leg of her pants, and there are some tights that are made out of thicker sweater knit that are much warmer for really cold winters.

Long johns can come in handy on the coldest days and they make great pjs. But when it was really cold and we were going to be out for a time, I used knit tights for my girls. And yes, you do want to take off her shoes to put on and take off the snowsuit . It makes it so much easier. I didn't really use snow pants until the kids were old enough to play in the snow. I usually just made sure I had a blanket with in case it was needed.

We use fleece snowsuits for our kids when they are young.....lands end and LL bean make great ones. (http://www.landsend.com/pp/SolidFleeceBunting~133172_-1.h...)
You can put layers underneath, and they have little things that fold up over the shoes and over the hands so you don't have to have separate gloves. I use these cause the big bulky snowsuits aren't safe in carseats and most of the time....we are going to the car. Gerber makes some long johns and thermal underwear sets that can also be used for jammies (beware though they run a little small). For a little girl you could probably use sweater tights too. Sometimes you can also find flannel lined jeans or just very long socks (like knee socks) that you can put on under the pants.

I use leggings in the winter time. You can look at www.babylegs.com or I just made my own. I bought "toe socks" that would fit me at Walmart and then cut the toes off. I added a bit of elastic around the bottom where I cut the toes off, but you really don't need to. Then when I put the leggings on I would makes sure they covered part of her shoes so that there was no gap between her socks and pants (this for when I put her in the car or stroller). If I were putting boots on her I would tuck the leggings inside the boots.

When I walked with the babies in the stroller I used a bundle-me and a blanket. If they were playing out in the snow, then I used snow pants with their boots. If it wasn't snowing I just used the lined jeans from the gap, and pull their socks up. Really, when it's super cold, the kids are usually in the stroller, and the bundle me or blankets are the best. I bought a Bumbleride stroller for the last one because it had a zip on foot muff that was the best. I never went without it last year! Try the lined pants from the Gap, I have some from Gymboree too. You could do warm tights too, with some cute ugg type boots! (sorry, I have 3 boys, I'm thinking pants!)

My baby was too chunky for jeans last winter, and could only wear stretchy cotton pants, so when I took her out of the house I'd put some thick tights on underneath her pants. It also solved the problem of keeping socks on an infant. I didn't use a snowsuit unless she was actually in the snow. They're too bulky to use in the car safely.

one thing that helps is buying "triple roll" (is that what you call them?) socks and pulling them up to her knees. at least it helps with the cold calves!

All last winter, I took my daughter on long walks (save for when it was below 20). I never thought of putting long underwear on her. I would just put a snowsuit on her and throw on extra blanket on top of her. So no, there is no need for long underwear unless she is going to be sitting outside for a long period of time, or something.

I did buy her long underwear for this year, however, because I suspect she will be playing in the snow for long periods of time and will need the extra protection.

I use BabyLegs. Google 'em. In fact, I use them instead of tights or pants when we're inside. There are also instructions online for making them yourself if you're included.

Enjoy winter!

You could get some thick tights for the bottoms, even for under jeans. When it gets snowy, have some snow pants & boots for her, or if boots are unrealistic, you can put her feet into baggies then put on her shoes. It'd keep her feet dry, sometimes boots are too hard for new walkers to wear. I'd say stock up on some cute tights though. The cable-knit type are very warm.

Have fun!

PS for the boots in the snowsuit question, I'd day no, put their socks on pulled up then snowsuit & boots. If you need to readjust them you can pull the snowsuit out of the boots but you'd really have a hard time getting the boots through the legs. And ... welcome to Chicagoland! Find a good hill & get some lightweight sleds, you'll have a blast when the snow comes, just don't forget a thermos of cocoa! :)

Hi, A.! My son will be 4 in February (he came home from the hospital in 10-degree weather) and because we'd always gone straight from the car to the indoors, I hadn't bought him any thermal underwear until recently, since I figure he may want to start playing in the snow this winter. If you spend a lot of time outdoors,or her socks aren't long enough to cover the gap between her pants and shoes, I'd definitely recommend thermals. I found Fruit of the Loom thermal underwear at Wal Mart for only $6 per set. The sizes range from 0-6 mos to 5T. If you're interested, you may want to start buying them now, since they're seasonal and hard to find as we move closer to winter.

As for the shoes and the snowsuit, whatever's easier for you is the better way to go.

I hope the info helps.
