Looking for a Good Air Purifier!

I am looking for a good air purifier that will eliminate odor and the after smell of smoke from the air. I have been reading all sorts of things about air purifiers with ozone and those with out –half the web sites say it is good half of them say it is bad. If any one has some input on this -or even a recommendation of a purifier that has worked for you- it would be great. Thanks!

What can I do next?

We have the IQ Air, supposedly the best and I can't disagree. It's made in Switzerland and used widely in Hong Kong and China. We actually live in Hong Kong so I can tell you it really works great! It has three layers of filters but ours has been running 24/7 for over a year and they still haven't needed to be replaced. It comes in two different sizes and has 6 settings, includes remote, and it's on wheels. Definately worth the cost if you want the best.

K.,
This isn't so much about an air purifier but about the smell of cigarette smoke. My husband has a very good friend who comes over and occasionally smokes in our home (hes the only one who ever does).
What I do to get rid of the smell is put out a few bowls of white vinegar overnight. It might sound strange but the vinegar will absorb the smoke odor and the house doesn't smell like vinegar either. I do it every time and it really works!

I have the Airsource 3000 and it is wonderful. It covers over 3000 square feet and uses the same technology that is being used in the Chinese subways and government buildings to battle SARS. I have lots of information that I could forward you on this. The unit was not cheap, so I did my homework before I made the purchase. Turns out for what you are getting, it is cheaper than the others when you factor in filters, electricity and upkeep! Private message me your email if you would like me to send you more info.

As far as I know the ecoquest is the best on the market, approved for use by NASA. You have to purchase through a dealer. Al Smith is a reputable one. His web site follows: http://www.ecoquestintl.com/dealer_home/welcome.asp?usr=a...

We bought a three pack of air cleaners from Sams Club by Hunter.(I think). Any how it comes with one that is suppossed to do a standard floor in your home and two room size cleaners. I use them in the basement because I do not allow smoking in the upstairs of my home. It does a fairly good job. WE bought one of those tower thingies that put off the smell of static years ago. I didnt think it worked as well. That is my opinion though. I know others who swear by it. Maybe be great for average allergens but it didnt stop smoke.

Hello K.,

Someone else responded on the Airsource 3000, and that would be the air purification unit that I would also recommend. I work with individuals with allergies and asthma often, and have amazing testimonies from everyone that has tried the Airsource. It was also rated #2 in Consumers Reports last year, and one unit does 3,000 sq. feet which it is hard to find one unit that has that much coverage. There is also a module that has to be changed once a year, compared to some which is once a month. If you would like to try an Airsource let me know, and feel free to visit http://www.shaklee.net/avwellness/product/55102. Under related info. there is some excellent informtation and there are also some comparisons of other similar products on the market.
We have one in our home, and I would not trade it for any other product on the market. I have had our unit for 7 years, and have never had a problem. I hope that helps, and good luck.

This fall we moved into a duplex where the previous occupants had been avid smokers. We tried everything for a couple of months to get the smell out of the house. We decided to try a small air purifier for our daughters room to see if it would work and it did. So we invested in a Honeywell air purifier with a carbon pre-filter for the rest of the house. It worked wonderfully! Within a few days, the smell was MUCH less noticable and within a few weeks, no one could smell any remenants of the smoke. From my research, the important part to remove the oder was the carbon pre-filter. The cheap one in my daughter's room worked, as well did the more expensive Honeywell for the rest of the house. I highly recommend it!

Not so much about the purifier, but you need to put your foot down if anyone is smoking in your house where your precious little ones live and breath. I don't care if it is your mother or grandfather or whatever. No one should be smoking in your house. Notice I said "your" house. It is your house and you can make the rules. I came from a family with quite a few smokers, including my parents and one of my husbands parents and my husband, but NO ONE smokes in MY house! (or MY car). Your kids only get one chance at life, and you can't let others comprimise their health. Good luck!!

It does get confusing with regards to the ozone. Here is the EPA website that may help, http://www.epa.gov/air/ozonepollution/standards.html. This will show you the standards for ozone allowed. The air purifier I have used for 7 years has passive ozone and it is .04 ppm, well under what the EPA states is okay for humans. There is a difference between ozone generators and passive ozone. Ozone generators are to be used ONLY when people are not in the building. They really should be used in exceptions, not every day.

It is great as it covers 3000 square feet. It has really helped me and my family with allergies and we hardly ever get sick.

Hope this helps. If you would like to email me to talk about it some more, my email address is ____@____.com Beth

Hi K.,
Check out ConsumerSearch.com. They sort of summarize ratings and reviews from multiple other sources. I ended up buying an Alen brand air purifier to help my allergies. It sure wasn't cheap, but it has helped. Don't pay attention to the commercials and stuff on tv. They sound so good, but when you do your homework, you will find out the real scoop. Good luck!
