Looking for Good Resturants in Bronx/Lower Westchester

I'm wondering if anyone would like to dish on their favorite eating establishments in the Bronx or Lower Westchester (Yonkers/Mt.Vernon/New Rochelle, etc). We are new to NY (almost 2 years) and haven't eaten out all that much. We would like to, but frankly, many of the resturants look scary to me! I'm not used to small "hole-in-the-wall" type of places, even though I know some may be really great. For me, location and what a place looks like on the outside colors my judgment. I'm from "suburbia" with big resturant chains where you pretty much know what to expect (and there's parking!). I'm not used to urban living. But we miss eating out and would love to try new places. We live in a really nice Bronx neighborhood (Pelham Gardens) which is very close to Westchester (I do most of my shopping there). We have 3 children (12, 3, 5months) so going to a child-friendly place is important. We are also vegetarian, so a good menu is important. We've eaten a few times in Little Italy and really enjoyed that, but we don't get to the city too often. So if anyone has some suggestions of good places with good food, I'm all ears!

What can I do next?

You have GOT to go try the Arther Ave. Market in the Bronx. It is right by the Zoo/Fordham Univ. on 187 St. It is the REAL Little Italy and you will love it. There is a cafe and a deli that serve all kinds of great food. You can buy fresh produce there and the kids love it because there is so much to look at. There are even a few fun shops for mom.

Also, there are several great places up central ave. in Yonkers. Pizza and Brew is wonderful. All three of these places are great. Spiga is family style.

My husband and I moved here about three years ago from suburbia Texas and we felt the same way. We live in Yonkers and often drive up to Rockland County to get our Chili's fix :-) http://www.palisadescenter.com

If it helps, you will learn to enjoy things about this part of the country, it just takes a little getting used to. Good luck and enjoy.

Hi & welcome to the big city S.!
I just went to lunch at an Italian restaurant in Larchmont called Bellizzi for the first time, and I absolutely loved it!

It's very family friendly, the price is reasonable, and your children would find lots of things to do. The older girl can draw on the paper tablecloth, and your boy will enjoy the arcarde area. I went with a friend who is a vegetarian, and she enjoyed the food. They also have entertainment for the kids. Last Friday, the entertainer played the guitar while singing nursery songs, and all the children were very engaged. My 4 year old didn't want to leave. We live on the Bronx/Mt. Vernon border, and the ride was about 15 minutes. Enjoy!

Hi S.,
There is a great restaurant in the Throgs Neck Area of the Bronx. Its called Tosca Cafe. They have a great weekend brunch on Sat & Sun....with fabulous food. There regular menu is great as well. The below link will give you all the details. Let me know if you have the chance to visit it anytime soon.
I myself am always in Westchester. Spend lots of time on Central Avenue. They have a Pizza n Brew on Central Ave that is great and family friendly as well. Also a little mexican place called Casa Maya. My husband is vegetarian as well so we always have to make sure we choose restaurants that work best.

How about Arthur Avenue? My husband and I used to eat in Emilia's all the time (during the dating phase - when we were young and spent money like water - although the restaurant is actually reasonably priced.
Umberto's Clam Bar is also good there - and they dont only serve fish.

Hi S.,
City Island has loads of restaurants that are good.
For kid friendly there is Seafood City, Johnny's Reef, Tony's Pier & JP's. (all have parking lots) Seafood city even has kid rides outside.
Bronx has a chucky cheese on Gun Hill Rd, just off of route 95.
New Rochelle has Queen City Buffet (mostly chinese selections) which is yummy and reasonable - they have a special pricing for kids depending on their age. They are just off of main st. at Centre - there is street parking, or lot parking (but you pay) 1/2 block away.

Best of Luck in your search & happy eating,
K.
