Looking for Good, Sturdy Wooden Step Stools.

We just found out that the wooden step stools we got at Target a while back have been recalled because they can come apart while you're standing on them. We have them in the bathrooms so the little ones can reach the sink and one in my son's closet so he can reach his clothes. These are the ones we have http://www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PREREL/prhtml11/11311.html
I like these ones because they were solid, not folding. They're 2 steps. They've been perfect but I don't want to take a chance with them breaking.
Can anyone recommend a good replacement that would be similar?

Edited: We have a bunch of the plastic Ikea step stools. I use one for a nursing stool, we use them next to the potty so little feet don't dangle, we use them in the kitchen. But they didn't work well in the closet or for the bathroom sinks. We tried. I just had one of the Ikea stools crack and threw it out yesterday. I didn't know Ikea makes a wooden step stool. I'm taking a look at what you suggest and looking around myself. Hope I find something soon. I know if it goes on the honey do list it'll never get done so it's easier to just replace them instead of reinforcing them ;)

What can I do next?

Does it just have to be wooden? Ikea sells excellent plastic step stools that have non-slip bottoms as well as non-slip "dots" on the top surface so kids don't slip. They are very durable and everyone around here has one. My daughter is 10 and we all use hers all the time including my husband and me -- to reach stuff in cabinets, for her to rest her feet on when playing the piano, as a floor-level small table, etc. They are one step, not two, but do the job very well indeed and last forever. And they are solid, not folding. I agree that any folding step is likelier to break or collapse. Try Ikea.

My FIL made a 2 step wooden step stool.
I like it because it's stable, sturdy and high enough for him to reach light
switches and sinks.
Since he made ours, I liked what one person posted...buying an unfinished one at a furniture store! It will be the same type.

Have a fantastic 2 step stool from Ikea that is wooden. Love the stool but a couple issues to be aware of. It is quite high so if you have the taller vanities it works otherwise it may be too high. Also, the corners are quite sharp and have had a couple bouts with bumps and bruises. Otherwise, it is very sturdy and a close runner up to the old Target step stool.

I have a Ginseng potty + step stool from Amazon. Its wooden and single step and looks sturdy enough. I do use regular plastic step stools everywhere else though, I bought Ginseng only because of good price at that time.

We got a wooden step stool from IKEA 2 years ago and it's been great! It is solid, 2 steps, and very sturdy. I think it is the Bekvam - that's what it looks like in the picture in the link below:

IKEA has nice plastic ones too.

If you like it I would keep using it ONLY IF you take proper measures to reinforce the step stool so that it will not callapse. Add you own nails and screws to help reinforce it.

I SO had one of these and it totally fell apart! We were never injured, so I never thought anything of it and we finally threw it away before we moved two months ago! Dang it!!

As for new ones, maybe Pottery Barn? When we moved we ended up needing 4 stools (1 bathroom to 4 bathrooms!) so I ended up buying plastic ones from Target with little grippers on the bottom. Works great for us. :)

Not wooden, so maybe not what you want, but I have these folding step stools (EZFoldz is the brand). One is small regular height and the other is tall and larger and holds up to 300 pounds. Mine are both black (the small one has some white polka dots on it too). I love them for home daycare! The short one works for dangling feet and for my very young (22 mos and up) potty trained kids...and the tall one works for my vessel bowl sink that I needed a tall stool.. so the kidlets can get to the sink without hanging their armpits in the vessel bowl sink (and it was hard to find until I found this one at Bed Bath and Beyond).

I searched long and wide for the right stools. I needed sturdy, space saving (they easily fold in half and tuck between my toilet and sink) and was a bit finicky about black (but that was my least worry overall). We use the bigger, taller, holds up to 300 pounds one for other things too...great when Grandma needs to get into our tall truck or I need to water my one plant that has to be up high due to home daycare or to reach all of the other things I need to keep "up high" for the same reason!

Just thought I would share that option...

Have you tried an "unfinished" furniture store? I have a really nice one from a store in the valley. My kids used it and it's so sturdy that my 89 year-old mom uses it to get into my Jeep!
