I am attempting to start lactating again. My daughter only breastfed for a few days at birth and then I stopped. She has had recurrent ear infections and I want to boost her immune system. Emily is now 9 months old. Is there anyone out there who has tried relactation?

What can I do next?

Look into books by Dr. Jack Newman. He is a Canadian doctor and a life saver as far as I am concerned. There is a drug, I can't remember the name of it right now, its not available in the US, but I took it (ordered online from New Zealand) and it worked WONDERS. Let me know if you want more info.

I relactated with my first child using a natural supplement called fennegreek (I think that is the spelling)in combination with a medical quality pump. I am not a doctor, so you should consult him/her before taking any supplement. Good Luck

I'm new in the area so I don't know too many people but when I stayed in ATL the local La Leche League was a great group that offer support fo nursing moms. You can check on the web for alocal LLL group and contact them for support. Also check with you local hospital or pediatrician for a lactation consultant. They are usual paid by the hospital so their services are free. My friends and I worked with the local lactation consultant and she was great. Please let me know if you find help.

My advice is to contact La Leche League or Home First (a medical practice in Chicago land that REALLY supports breastfeeding). I didn't do this, but have heard that it can be done. Talk to a lactation consultant for support.

Good luck and I congratulate you on a brave attempt. I nursed my daughter until 2 and am convinced that her health was the better for it!

I hope to do this same thing after adopting from China. I know you can do it. i ordererd a book through LLL( la LEche League) to help me. I have not gotten the book yet, as we are a year to 2 away from getting our baby. I know it can be done. I breastfed my daughter until she was 2.5 years old. Let me know if you get any other good responses. I also saw a lactation specialist in Naperville through a store called transitions into parenthood. She was awesome and free!

Hi M.,
I would recommend that you check out Dr Jack Newman's website at www.drjacknewman.com. He is the breastfeeding guru, and you might find some good resources there.

Hi - NW Hospital has a breastfeeding 800# hotline. I no longer have the #, but you can probably call NW Hospital (or Prentice Women's Hospital at NW Hospital) to get it. The hotline offers free advice and can tell you what you will need to do to start lactating again. You can also try contacting your local La Leche League. Contact info is on the web. Good luck!
