So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! Sorry about the spelling. I am new to wines. I was a beer drinker for a long time, now that i am getting older, beer doesnt taste as good to me. I am serving Moscato, White Zin and a Pinot Grigio at the party. We will be having h'orderves and some chips and dips, so i am trying to keep it open. Most of the girls that i invited are wine drinkers....

FYI, Moscato is really sweet like a desert wine. May I suggest my favorite white, which is a Riesling (Barefoot, Relax, and Yellow tail are good inexpensive brands), it is sweet, but not as much. It is a good one for someone who's not a typical wine drinker.

Barefoot also has a good Pinot (good wine choice!)...keeping the cost low.

Don't do more than 4 types for a small party unless it's a "wine tasting" party. Keep the white wines chilled in an ice bucket for display and serving.

IF you are interested in trying a red, don't do Merlot--go for Old Vine Zin, or Malbec, which are more palatable for those who aren't wine snobs.

I would add a red if you have wine drinkers coming. Most wine drinkers do either red or white, not white zin - it's kind of the kool-aid of wine unless you find a really great (read: expensive) brand. V. Sattui in Napa has a wonderful Gamay Rouge and is the only blush my wine friends & I will drink, but it's not sold in stores. Oh, and I'm a big fan of cheap wine that tastes great, but cheap white zin tastes like cheap wine.

My favorite is Nivole...

I'd say get a couple of varieties of Moscato and let the guest have fun.

I'm with Laurie G.: the Barefoot Moscato is inexpensive and just fine. My husband got on a roll with it and we drank it almost exclusively a summer or two ago. I finally had to tell him "Buy something else".

Suggestion: I'd also offer a drier white for those who don't care for fruitier wines. Many larger grocery stores have a wine steward on site. I've had very good luck with using the ones at our Kroger-owned stores here. (QFC and Fred Meyer). They'll be able to help you pair your wines to your meal, which is fun. I've learned a lot more about wines this way than I have touring vineyards.:) ((Ooop!--Christie said that already!))

Well, moscato (is this what you are buying? I looked up mescado and couldn't find it.) is really, really sweet. It is typically more of a dessert wine. If you are hosting a party, you may want to consider offeringa more balanced white wine like a pinot grigio or i just found a viognier that is supper good and not too oaky or too sweet, but has more flavor than pinot.
In terms of a brand if you are set on the moscato, the barefoot brand is great for entertaining in terms of price and quality.
Have fun!

It's spelled Moscato, and we really like the Barefoot brand. It's usually on sale for $5 at Kroger (not sure if you have them). Yes, we like cheap wine, because it tastes good to us! Sorry if you were looking for a more sophistocated answer!

We just got into Moscato as well. We found one that has Asti with it and it is delicious. I can't think of the name right now but if I can I will PM you the name of it.

SweetCakesWinery.com has a very delicious Moscato as well and is a descent price. We were told that for $ to $ it is one of the best in its price group.

Oh Karen R..... we should get together and drink wine sometime! I am a big fan of the Zinfandel variety myself. And Malbec as well.... Not so much a fan of any of the sweet stuff.

Yes, Barefoot Moscato is good. I have discovered I also REALLY like Sutter Home Moscato!!! In my opinion, it is better than Barefoot. It is smoother and slightly sweeter. I like sweet wines, and not just for dessert.

Another sweet wine is a Riesling. I like Chateau Ste. Michelle's Harvest Select Riesing. Since it is a later harvest, it is sweeter. Their regular riesling is also tasty, yet not as sweet.

St. Supery (Napa winery) had the best Moscato I ever tasted.
You can buy it at Cost Plus (not Costco).
Or check to see if they have a website online or call to see what
other places in your area they may sell to.
If all else fails, go to a Beverage and More wine outlet in your area and ask the employees there what they recommend is the best selling Moscato.

If you want a cheap Moscato, the best is probably Sutter Home or Beringer over Barefoot. Beringer also has a yummy Red Moscato. For just a little more, one of the best Moscato's is Allegro for about $10-$12 a bottle.

In Missouri, we spell it Muscato! Anyway, if you like the sweeter wines, then what about trying some of the fruitier ones: pink catawba, cherry, plum, blackberry, etc. Missouri is blessed with a boatload of small vineyards carrying such delights!

St James Winery sells all over the nation. Every single one of their products is excellent! Hermanoff & St Genevieve are also fantastic. Check out some of their websites....my Aunt orders online all the time!

Sutter home has a decent one that's reasonably priced (I'd say cheap but there's wines out there like $3 a bottle).. it's cheaper but still good quality.. And does it have to be moscato? You don't see that a lot for parties.. I can understand a Chard or even a Zin. Is it for a punch or something? Just curious..
