Mirena Vs. NovaSure Vs. Birth Control (Microgestin)

I have a Mirena IUD also and I love it. I had really heavy periods and very painful cramps associated with it. I love my IUD for several reasons 1- I no longer worry about getting pregnant (like when I'm on antibiotics, etc) 2- I still have a slight pink period once every 4 weeks but it is TONZ lighter (hardly need any protection) 3- it's reduced my cramps to barely nothing. I've had it going on 3 yrs. I wish my previous doctor had recommended this after my first child 5 yrs ago, instead of a pill that made me have mini periods all month long (still bitter about that), but then I never would have gotten pregnant with my daughter who makes every day wonderful. I'm using the Mirena IUD (nonhormonal) it works well but be advised it made my periods heavier and more painful and my obgyn said that is not unusual.

As far as the pill or other hormone treatments are concerned, they have been linked to stroke and heartattack in young women. I had a stroke at 35 that we suspect was linked to my birth control. This side effect IS MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK. Many of the technicians and nurses that treated me after my stroke indicated they have seen too many young woman with this side effect and many indicated that is why they will not use this method of birth control. I was surprised. I thought my situation was unique but it is not.

I love the Mirena IUD! I am on my second one. They last five years each. It's not fun having it put in place, but soon afterwards you don't have periods or they are VERY light. My periods were about 2-3 weeks long before I had one put in. It's so nice not to have to deal with that. I only have to use panty liners now. I didn't have my tubes tied or have the oblation done because it was so pricey. The only negative thing I had happen was when by GYN couldn't find the strings and I had to have an ultrasound to make sure it was in the right place. It was fine. So make sure they leave the strings longer. My IUD seems to move up over time. I don't know if that happens to everyone though. I think Mirena is a great option. Good luck to you!

Hi A., my name is C. and I work for my mom who just happens to be an OB/GYN. We see alot of these problems. My mom does recommend the Mirena. I think it's a great option. It's not as invasive as the NovaSure and it last for 5 years, so you don't have to ever think about it. We are just now looking at getting the NovaSure in our office so I'm not as educated on it as I'd like to be.... but I've heard great things about it. My thoughts would be to consider the Mirena first then go for the more aggresive route if it's just not right for you.
I had the Mirena for 3 years. It was nice not having a period. I took it out to have another baby, and decided not to get another just because I don't have period problems. Something I would say you should also consider is if your insurance will pay for it. All these procedures can be pricey, but you can't put a price on the quality of your life. I've had Essure and NovaSure done. No babies so far but I still get a light period. MUCH better than I was prior to the procedure. Both were easy for me, next to do downtime at all.

My doctor wated me OFF The Pill because I'm 43 years old. At some point you end up in a dangerous area and getting off The Pill made both of us feel better about potential blood clots.

I don't have the answer (I wish I did!) but just wanted to let you know that I'm going through the same thing! 39, done having kids, ultra heavy periods... it sounds *so* familiar!
Two days from now I have an appt for an ultrasound on my uterus to make sure there aren't any problems like cysts, fibroids, etc. After that's done is when the dr & I will make the decision to do ablation or not. I've heard that if you have severe cramping that the IUD can be expelled - not that it happens often, but it is something to keep in mind. Unfortunately, I can't take the pill for other health reasons - sure would love to do something that easy!
The gyn that I'm working with said that there are several different types of ablation - some work better than others. I'm thinking that this will be the option for me. Since my boy started K last week I'm going to try & get back into the workforce. Heaven knows I can't work when all I want to do is lay on the floor while moaning and crying for a week each month! ;)

I really like my Mirena IUD. I have had it almost a year and finally do not have a period. I have had horrible periods my whole life, which only got worse after my daughter. I went through every kind of pill for years and then tried Nuvaring, and this was my last option. You might spot for a couple of months, but when it finally gets regulated it is worth it, and it lasts 5 yrs at least. I have recommended it to anyone that will listen:)

I have had Mirena for 4 months now and I love it! I also haven't had a period since I got it in too, which is totally nice.

I have loved my Mirena IUD. I've had it for almost 5 years. I haven't had a period in probably 4 years. SO nice! Sadly, I have to get it removed this fall so I'm having my tubes tied in October.

I have never regretted getting my IUD.

I did the NovaSure back in December and I love not having a period. It was outpatient had a little cramping afterwards for that day. I also had the Essure done a month before hand to make sure no more babies.

I have had irregular periods my whole life. This spring I have had maybe 3 dry days and then last month I had a period every day for 4 weeks. My blood levels were as low as when I had my c-sections. So low.. for a period, but not low enough that I was going to die my doctor said in the ER. So I took arounds of 600 ml of IB's until my morning doctor visit for IUD. My period dried up for about 3 days, then it came back. I was going through about 1 tampon and pad a day. The IUD has been in about 2 weeks and this morning I was pretty dry, we will see this afternoon.
I am sick of the periods and if it don't stop after 2 to 3 months I am going to have the surgery. I don't want it, but this bleeding every day is not a normal woman life.

I think there are a lot of woman to have this issue, but are maybe a little private to talk about it. This stuff stinks!! Best of luck to ya.
