I don't have twins but I'm watching a show about twins that were just born & I wonder if mothers of twins confuse the babies at first & if so for how long until you could differentiate? Just wondering?

What can I do next?

Nope. Even though my girls are identical, we'd noticed distinct differences immediately.

The question should be for parents of IDENTICAL multiples. I have triplets but are fraternal, non-identical. Most multiples are fraternal. Mine are 2 boys and a girl and all three were very different looking in size and features. The thing with fraternals are that they are as alike or different as any other siblings but just happened to be born on the same day. One son looks like his Spanish husband with large, dark features. One son has tiny features with pin curls and looks like his German great-grandmother. Our daughter looked like the mailman when he was born, lol. She now is a mix of both my husband and I. We also have two older boys. One triplet son looks more like our 24 year old, both looking like my side of the family. One triplet son looks like his 15 year old brother, both of them look like their Spanish side of the family. Our daughter, again, looks like both but leans a touch more like me.

With that said, I've known others online and in person who have had identicals and most times the parents had no problem telling them apart. They have an intimate relationship with their babies so most have no problems. On rare occasion there was a mix up but usually due to sleep deprivation. Many will color code their identicals (we do it with fraternals too due to sleep deprivation).

I have never had any problem telling them apart. Mine are identical. I even left the ankle bracelet of one on when they came home from the hospital cause I was worried that I wouldn't be able to once we were home. That lasted 24hrs. I knew that I didn't need it. It's funny cause ppl ask all the time how do you tell them apart? They look as different to me as any siblings would. It's like I tell ppl, personality has a lot to do with looks.

I don't have multiples but I knew a woman who had identical twin girls and from the day they were born I could tell them apart. I didn't see them often but they had some differences. One was slightly heavier and they had other subtle differences. But I never had a problem telling them apart from day one, so I imagine parents would have just as easy if not easier time. However that being said, other people who saw them more often than me had a hard time telling them apart, and I am really not sure why. Their parents had no problem telling them apart, and so I wonder why others do. Perhaps people don't take notice of the subtle differences? I am not one to notice a lot of detail, but maybe I did in this situation knowing that made the difference. As a child I grew up with identical twin boys until we moved away in 6th grade, and I also never had any problem telling them apart. Teachers however did. So I would have to say if you take notice of their differences, which they absolutely have, then you will have no problem, and perhaps some of the differences might be things like vocal or how they carry themselves or other personality traits, but honestly before the girls could even roll over I had no problem and still could tell them apart when they grew to teens. Even from just looking at them I knew which was which. So I don't know what the answer is, but I have to say in my experience even identical twins have enough differences to tell them apart.

Mine are fraternal, and from the minute I met them I've always known which was which. Moms of identical twins that I know say the same thing. They've never confused them. Now, there are times I'm in a rush and only see the backs of their heads. Sometimes I confuse them, but it's more from me not paying attention.

We have friends whose twins are so identical they paint one daughter's toenails! As they get older and change weight it's a little easier to tell them apart, but, yes, they need external markers!
