Bugs are attracted to light. Keep the inside dark so they don't flock to the windows, screens, etc.
We like to go and play outside. The last couple days I have been sitting on our steps watching my kids play outside and I now have about 7 bites and my daughter has about 5. I got some bug spray and anti itch cream so that it all taken care of now. But, how do you keep them from going inside the house when you open the door to go in and out? I was just making dinner and I'm wearing shorts (it's 85 degrees out) and I felt something on my leg. The bug already flew away but I saw where it landed in the kitchen so I went and killed it, but it had bitten me! How do I keep them out of the house? I don't want to have to wear bug spray inside! and I know it's just going to get worse through out the summer. Also I am allergic to them too. My bites swell up to the size of baseballs and have had to take antibiotics many times from them in the past. I don't want them in my house! yuck!
Thanks!!
ok thanks! My husband said he bought some citronella candles but they are still in his car (and he is at work right now, lol). I haven't seen any standing water near us. We don't even have our outdoor water turned on yet from winter, lol!
I can't move the plants since we are renting and I don't think my landlord would like me digging in the yard to move them. My next door neighbor does have some plants that are in pots but they belong to her and she doesn't speak very good english so asking her to move them would be a little bit difficult.
Cheryl, don't worry! I understand how things can get busy. Just call when you can.
Thanks! I will get those candles out and see if they help

Make sure you have NO STANDING water ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR FRONT DOOR - those plants you have on the front stoop? Make sure you move them AWAY from the front door.
Also here is a link to five plants that repel mosquitoes!!

I'm sorry I've not called recently!! I've been busy!! I'll send you a PM!!!
Get rid of any standing water -- that's their breeding ground.
Also use colored lights as your outside lighting and in the house near doorways. The night bugs can't see as well in colored lighting.
Keep baking soda on hand and make a paste with water and use on bites.
I found a great product from Garndeners Supply. Its called Mosquito Beaters. It's non toxic and repels the mosquitos. I spread it around our entire yard. I was surprised at how well it works. We, of course, also take great pains to get rid of any standing water but you can only do so much. We went from 10s of bites to 1 or 2! You do have to reapply every month or so but this stuff is awesome!
spray bug spray for mosquitos around your house and all around the creveces, and also see if there is a puddle, or a water leak, or pool that is turning green. mosquitos will lay their larva in mucky water. we are getting them too. they seem to be a bit more pesky this year. oye....
We have a mosquito trap. Pricey but worth it. I used to get eaten alive just walking out the door. Now I spend hours in the yard and never get bitten. :)
I've read many places to put Listerine in a spray bottle and spray the doorframe with it. I don't know how often you need to do this, but I did read it several different times, so I think it's legit.
It sounds like you need a Mosquito Magnet. We purchased one when the west nile virus was so prevelant and LOVE it!! It even helps control the mosquitos in the neighbors' yards, as well.
What about citronella candles by the doorways... the scent would keep them away from that area, then unless they came on you they should be kept out.
You need to eradicate the mosquitoes where they breed.
Standing water.
They can breed in even 1 tablespoon of water.
They have a certain radius/distance that they fly.
You can wear all the repellants you want. But you will still have mosquitoes if you do not eradicate their source of breeding.
Just spray clorox in any standing water or get rid of standing water in your yard.
I was once recommended to take Vitamin B supplements to ward off mosquitos. apparently vitamin b makes your skin taste less sweet to them.
From this advice, in the summer, I don't used fragranced products.
as for keeping them from your house...they have these mosquito zapper things..
also they like still water...so try to keep things dry and clean.
lastly -- what about screens in the bedrooms???
best of luck.

SKIN SO SOFT by AVON works! I have used the product for years on myself and our children. I make sure to keep 3 or 4 bottles of the stuff.
I purchase the spray bottle and we spray it on before getting dressed,it keeps the mosquitos away.
Skin So Soft by Avon is supposed to be a good deterrent of mosquitoes.
