More of a usage peeve than a spelling peeve.

The misuse of the word "literally." Example: "He was literally thrown to the wolves." Really? There was a pack of wolves just waiting around to see if you threw someone their way? Wow.

The misuse makes me literally want to poke my eyes out. Ha Ha!

Voila (yes I know that technically that is also misspelled because the a is missing an accent). It's not "wallah" or "walla" or any other phonetic misspelling. If you're going to use a French word, know how to spell it!

And "per se" not persay, per say etc.

And while we're at it..."ice tea" or "ice coffee" instead of "iced." I want to add a "d" to every sign and menu that doesn't have one.

You've got me riled up now, I'm sure I'll be back with more!

ETA: Alright is a word that is gaining acceptance in some circles. Some publications agree that "alright" means "OK or acceptable" vs. "all right," which is taken to mean that "everything is correct."

I'll tell you what bothers me, when someone on this site corrects my spelling. I've always been a bad speller. I think my artistic side refuses to believe there is only one way to do things. This is why I never liked math either, though I was good at it. What bothers me is when people feel the need to point it out (unless they are teacher or coworker helping you put out descent work). I don't point out when people have bad taste, or don't know how to accessorize, or use a horrible shade of paint. I keep my thoughts to myself. I feel the same courtesy should apply to us spelling challenged.

How about... "alright"?

By the way, there was an elementary school down the street from our house. The school officials put up a big modern sign advertising its name. They also added a "slogan," which read, in part: "We meet student's needs...."

I don't think the reason the city closed the school was because of the sign, but it certainly wasn't good advertising.

(Also by the way, spell-check doesn't help if the way you misspell a word makes it another legitimate word. Often the machine hasn't brains enough to know which one you really need to use.)

Wow. I have only read about 10 posts and I am realizing, that although I think I am a decenly good speller, I make a lot of mistakes that annoy you ladies. ALOT is two words? I think I often type that as one, but sometimes as two. Hmm. I will keep an eye on that. And "Could care less" isn't right either? Ha. I had never thought of that. I always hate double negatives, but never considered "could care less" being negated. I was going to say the ever-so-popular "Your/You're" one, which drives me up the wall. But lately, the biggest one is where I get an email and it's all in Text-Message-Language. I do a little of this ("btw, ttyl") but the WHOLE email is in text or shorthand: "Cnt tlk now cuz 2 bzy. ttyl" ANNOYING!

ADDED: "Meeting student's needs" is correct isn't it? (MARY L below) It's the needs of the students, so it's possesive, so it needs an apostrophe? I think the sign is right.

I am SOOO guilty of saying "Anyways" as a transition word. I bet I annoy a lot of people with that one. SORRY! I am likely not going to stop.

When I see ya'll instead of y'all. (and for those who need a grammer lesson, y'all is a contraction of 'you' & 'all'. The apostrophe takes place of the missing letter or letters...there is NO 'a' in the word 'you'...all is the complete word, therefore, y'all is correct!....just like don't is correct for do not). And I do purposely misspell words for shortcut purposes to save time if I'm in a hurry & I know that the recipiant (non business) knows what I'm saying but I do agree that 'prolly' is SUPER annoying! I never use it. Also 'axe me a question' rather than 'ask me a question', using to instead of too, the usual words that are misspelled due to obvious ignorance but I do hafta say, er I mean have to say, that saying ya'll instead of y'all is my number one pet peeve other than axe instead of ask. Oooo I thought of another one...'lil for "little" or l'il for "little"...I believe it's actually li'l, although there's no 'e'...someone will hafta lemmie, er I mean have to let me, know what happens to the 'e'.
