so I got contacts yesterday morning and from the start my eyes were itching, started to dry out and got really red.
Called my doctor and came in and they told me my eyes were really dried out and needed to be moisturized and told me to wear my glasses again.
I tried the Acuvue Oasys and hated them.. tried another brand of Acuvues and liked them ALOT but they still irritated my eyes.
I guess its trial and error but what type of contacts would be best for me... i really dont want to wear my glasses anymore!
Also has anyone dealt with having their eyes act like this with new contacts?
I really need advice!
I don't wear glasses or contacts but my daughter does. Although she can use water with hers a few of her friends are very picky about the wetting solutions. The wrong ones make their contacts intolerable.
You may want to look into that.
How long are you wearing them at a time? Not all day, right?
Keep trying until you find the right kind. Blink full blinks and adhere to the doctor's schedule of wearing times. Make sure that you put them in before you TOUCH makeup or lotion. You need oil-free fingers to put them in.
You also need wetting drops - are you using those?

When I started wearing contacts (this was YEARS/decades ago), they told me to build up to it.
Wear them for a few hours a day then gradually build up to wearing them for longer periods of time.
No matter how breathable the contacts are, your eyes still need some time each day (not when you are sleeping) without contacts in them so they can breathe properly.
What solution are you using for them?
My eyes were sensitive to anything with thimerosal in it (which use to be a preservative).
I gave up wearing contacts when I had Lasik done 13 years ago and didn't need them anymore.
I use Acuvue Oasys with no problems.
Maybe when you are putting your contacts in you have something else on your hands, make sure your hands are clean and free of oil and lotion.?
The contacts have to go in correctly as well, you cant put them on inside out with a good result.
Are your eyes dry normally?
Do you have makeup on that might be melting into your eyes?
The acuvue oasys are so soft and moist I actually have dry eyes when I DONT have them in.... I'm sorry you seem to be having an opposite effect.
Yes, what kind of solution are you using? I know that some solutions work on my eyes better than others and one brand I bought was awful! My eyes dry out a lot, I think I have the Oasys as well, but they aren't as moist as I thought they would be!
For this type of contact you have to use a very specific solution...of course I can't remember the names right now but one starts with an A and comes in a green box and the other one is new and called Bio eyes or Clean eyes or something. It comes in a clear bottle with green lettering I think. There are not generics for these brands, which really sucks, but you really need to use them. I get my solution at Costco and it's definitely cheaper.
Oh yes, and if this is your first time wearing contacts you will need to wear them for a few hours and then take them out. You don't want to go straight to wearing them all day.
If your eyes are itching and red, could you be allergic to the contact lens solution? I'm allergic to the preservatives in many eye drops. A friend who worked at Allergan said this is common.
I have used Acuvue Oasys for a very long time - any others I've tried are scratchy to me, but I guess each person has to try different ones and pick the best that works for them.
You just have to take it slow - add a couple hours of contact wear per day to ease your eyes into it.
My eye doctor just told me a couple weeks ago (first time I've ever heard this) that I have eyes that produce lower levels of the oil that lubricates my eyes and that's why my contacts dry out when I go to the movies. She said when you look forward, your eyes dry out faster (who knew??). She just told me to use rewetting drops.
I normally wear Acuvue Advanced because they seem to be more "slippery" if that makes sense. My eyes don't dry out as much (i've been wearing contacts for what seems like forever). The last time I ordered, they accidentally ordered Acuvue Oasis and I didn't realize it. I felt like i wanted to gouge my eyes out. I went back in and apparently there is a different chemical in the plastic for those and I was allergic to it! So every brand really is different. Try different types and brands and see what suits you. You definitely have to build up the callous on your eye though, that's why they say to wear them for a little bit each day and work your way up.
Hopefully your doctor is giving you trial samples to try out. My doctor put a different brand in each eye and had me come back in a few days before we settled on a pair. We did it a few times. You may need to change the solution that you are using.
