My Husband Just Got His Appendix Out and I Need to Know What to Expect....

I am a surgical nurse and I have had a Lap for surgery. No lifting(10lbs) for 2-4 weeks (each doctor does the "rules" a bit different). Warm blankets or heating pad for his belly, LOTS of walking to help the bowels keep moving and to pass are things that are big. Each person is a little different on how they bounce back, warm drinks, no carbonation, walks and no lifting is the most important. Also watch the incisions, if you get any red, swelling, pus, or temp over 100.5 call your doctor...could be an infection. No playing tough, if it hurts take some medication, if you have pain you will heal slower. But if you do take meds drink more water and walk more because they can cause you to be constipated, which is miserable after abdominal surgery. If you want to know more send me a message.

My husband had his out last year when I had a 2 year old and a one year old it was not that bad.(Thank goodness for grandmas and grandpas) He was not to lift like people said and he was on pain meds for a few days and could not drive. I would say he was okay by four days other than not being able to lift heavy stuff. He was back to work and eating whatever I put infront of him by that fourth day. SO do not worry they recover quickly.

I just had mine out on January 6th. What a way to start 2008! I never saw this coming at all. I'm also 32 years old. I went in with bad stomach pain and had mine out withing about 6 hours as well. It was also that laproscopic procedure. I had 3 incisions: The main was thru my belly button, the other two were on either side of it. I guess they pulled out my appendix thru the belly button. GROSS! Anyway, I was in the hospital for a day and a half - two days or so. I could have gone home after the first day but chose to stay because my mobility was very limited and I have two toddler boys and knew that I would NOT be able to relax at home. No way. Anyway, I was up and around the day I got home and doing just fine! I recovered very very fast. The first week I had help with my boys and house chores but I was still up and doing stuff... just doing it gingerly. Oh and I had the surgery on a Sunday and by the next Saturday um, I had sex. A lot of it. I know that is TMI but I'm just mentioning it because of your question about what to expect.

Recovery is a breeze with laproscopic procedures. You just have to be as careful as you can. I didn't lift anything for two weeks... including my kids. But other movements are fine if they don't affect the abdomen. Well, I still managed sex though! LOL!

Maybe I just recover fast, who knows. Maybe I just got lucky and had a fabulous surgeon. I hope your hubs had a fabulous surgeon too and that he is doing really well! Just make sure he takes it easy, doesn't lift anything and is ginger in his movements.

But, DO NOT LET HIM JUST SIT AROUND AND MILK IT EITHER! That might prolong his recovery. He needs to protect his abdomen but I don't think lying around and doing nothing will help. :):) GOOD LUCK!

WEll he can't lift anything. THIS IS IMPORTANT. YOU DON'T WANT HIM TO RIP OPEN THE INCISION!! It all depends on what the drs say. My husband had his removed and it was 6 weeks no lifting. He barely got off the couch for 3 weeks. No driving for 2 weeks I think. He juSt will need rest... so it will be like having another child in the house. If your kids are older maybe they can help too!! :)

Hi! i had my appendix out when i was 40. laying on the couch was better for me. but if he choose the bed, he should climb in knee first. and for the bowel, he should drink warm prune juice and give it time to work. do not eat heavy , you do not want your stomach to get full and tight. do not confine yourself to lying down alot.take your time, but try to stand straight a little, and do much walking around the house.good luck on your recovery. My husband had a "stomach ache" on a Friday after work. He had his appendix out Saturday morning and the same as your husband. He was walking the floor by 2pm he went home Sunday afternoon and worked till 11 pm and went to work Monday morning. He said he was a little sore by Wed. He couldn't lift anything or work out for 4 weeks.
