My 6 yr old will not stop biting his nails. They are getting so bad that the skin around them is all red and is peeling. Any suggestions on how to get him to stop?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your ideas. I am pretty sure that this is just a bad habit with hem. I bought that Thum stuff and it seems to be working. I haven't seen him bite his nails all week. Thanks again.

I have a 2 year old that is already biting his nails.. It runs on my husbands side of the family. So far it isn't too bad but if it gets any worse, I am going to dry a product called THUM. It is like a nail polish that tastes horrible. I remind him constantly to keep his hands out his mouth so maybe this will help. Good Luck.

As a nail-biter since age 4, find out WHY he is biting his nails. No accusations on your family (so please do not take it that way), but I started because of nerves (I was being abused by my stepparents).

NOTHING could stop me from biting. My mom got my nails done, I had pepper concotions put on them, I had the nail-biting gross stuff put on them, I had bandaids on them, I had gloves, heck they even stuck my fingers under a microscope to show me what grossness was beneath...nothing could stop me from biting because it was a comfort when I was nervous.

Maybe your son just likes biting his nails, but usually nail biting is a nervous habit...maybe he is being picked on at school? Or nervous about school?

Good luck!! Sorry I do not have much great advice, but I would start out with seeing if something is bothering him. Then move on to the bandaids/nail polish (there is some polish that is clear and it tastes horrid for nail biting).

Mommy of 4 non-nail biters.

My daughter was a nail bitter. To get her to stop, we talked about the bad things about biting her nails and the good. Because she's a girl we talked about nail polish and going for a manicure, but maybe you can think of something he enjoys that he won;t be able to do if he hurts his fingers by biting. If you notice that it is at certain times of the day that he bites, plan activities that he has to use his hands for and distract him. If rewards work for him, tell him he can go somewhere, do or have something, whatever works for you, when you can clip his fingernails. Count yourself lucky if he doesn't bite his toenails too! LOL! Good luck, and remember the nurses at the pediatrician office, if they have kids, are sometimes a good source of advise for these types of things and you can do it over the phone! Good luck again!

bu thum at the drugstore - it goes on like nail polish. It tastes really bad and your child will stop once he tries to put that finger in his mouth

Hi! This might sound a little weird but did you try putting something on his nails that might taste weird but something that won't hurt him maybe that will stop him from bitting when he realizes that it tastes bad.

hi J.. sorry to hear about your little guy. i dont any boys, and my daughter isnt that old yet. the one thing that came to my mind when i saw this though, was maybe have him wear gloves ? it sounds sort of silly, and he might not even keep them on. but it could help prevent them from getting picked at. have you asked him why he does it? are his fingers bothering him or is it just a habit developing. also, maybe tell him that his hands have germs and if he keeps putting his fingers in his mouth he might get sick from doing that. like i said, im not sure, b/c ive never been through that. just sugguesting. hope you find a solution!
