Nasal Discharge ...I Don't Think It Is Just Allergies Anymore

Does she have a fever? It could be a sinus infection. Doctors will tell you that it is rare in children, but if you read anything about asthma... sinus infections and asthma go hand in hand. Generally Albuteral is used to treat children with symptoms of asthma. Have you taken her to see an pediatric allergist/pulmonary doctor?

They only other thing that I can think of that would cause a foul smell is if she is a toddler... maybe she stuck something up her nose?

If she starts running a fever, or there is no improvement, I would take her back. Viral illness that persist can often lead to a bacterial illness. She may have just been starting an infection and it is now more prominent? Go with your gut Momma.

Take her to another doctor. I think she has some kind of infection. I had a lot of issues when my son had the croup. the stupid doctor never diagnosed it correctly. if it is allergies the zyrtec should clear it up or at least alleviate the congestion.

I agree-- take her back to the doctor. (Sucks, doesn't it?) Nasal discharge for more than 2 weeks usually meets the criterion for treating for a sinus infection in a non-verbal child. That coupled with the color and smell makes it sound like a sinus infection. I'd be pretty surprised if your doctor doesn't go for some antibiotics.

i get sinus infections frequently, and it sure sounds like a sinus infection to me. watch out when suctioning...i know when my sinuses get really thick, it can be painful when they move. have you tried saline mist or drops to thin the mucus? i would either see a different doc in the practice, or something. the smell is a real indicator to me.

Have the doctor check her ears. Both inner and outer. My son gets ear infections all the time and when he has them he has foul smelling discharge from his nose and a cough. Also sometiimes his breath smells funny. The smell comes from when their ears are draining. It drains through the nose and other areas.

the thick green mucus and foul smell make me think of a sinus infection. usually a low grade temp accompanies this but maybe it doesn't always happen that way. Hope you figure this out soon and your daughter feels better.

Is the discharge on one side? If so, there is probably food or a foreign body stuck up her nose. Go back to the doctor or the ER. And perhaps find a new pediatrician.

Sounds like a sinus infection. Call the dr. right away for antibiotics.

Is there any chance she could have something stuck in her nose? Years ago I worked in daycare & had a similar experience w/ a girl in my room. The smell was horrible and she constantly had discharge. The parents finally took her to the dr & she had a piece of cotton stuck way up in her nose. Once the dr removed it she was fine. I'm sure your dr checked, but just a thought.

Maybe there was no sign of infection on Friday and it developed over the weekend. You should get her checked out again.

I agree with the one who said maybe there is a foreign object in her nose. That is a possibility and should be checked out. Kids stick stuff up their noses. Once my daughter stuck gum up her nose. Got that out before it went to far up.

My sister's daughter had a similar thing and it was paper she shoved up her nose. They thought it was a sinus infection and gave her meds. They took her back when it didn't clear up and the doctor on duty had worked in the ER and figured it out.

Anything other than clear is typically an infection.

My allergist has told me that if the doctor looks up the nose and the lining is silver than it is allergies. If it looks like hamburger meat than it is bacterial. The doctor should be able to tell by what they are seeing.

I would take her back in so she can be given antibiotics.
