Ok, so I know I've mentioned it here before, but I run a website that organizes flash mobs for my area. I don't get paid for it and any expense I incur is solely bore by me. I started it thinking it would be a lot of fun for me and my friends...and it grew from there.

Well, today I was contacted by a mobber who's girlfriend is coming home from Iraq this week. He wants to propose to her, flash mob style. The problem? I'm out of ideas that would be relatively inexpensive, yet unforgettable, awesome and truly amazing.

So what do I do when I'm in a pickle and want to give this woman an amazing surprise? I turn to you mamas. Do any of you have any ideas on how I can put this together?

It should be noted, I have about 2 1/2 weeks to put it together. It's looking like I'll have at least 25 people. (Depending on the where and what time, I may have in upwards of 100.)

So, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help me come up with an amazing proposal idea for a soldier just home from Iraq. GO! ;)

TIA! *HUGS*

So What Happened?

I have no idea what an online flash mob is. I have a website where people can sign up for flash mobs and read what they're about, etc. We do the flash mobs out at malls, bookstores, the Riverwalk, etc. It will be in San Antonio.

I don't want to give out too much information on her, but she likes roses. They enjoy going to the movies together. There is a restaurant that she loves, but it's a ritzy restaurant and I doubt they would let us do anything in there.

Thank you so much for the ideas! I've taken bits and pieces of them and come up with a few of my own. I appreciate the jump start. For some reason my brain wasn't being all that creative today.

Also, to the mama that said I should get paid for this: I've never charged for any of our flash mobs. I don't charge to participate or anything. I ask for donations on the website and have a store set up where you can buy t-shirts and things. I look at it as though I'm paying happiness forward. I love the looks on people's faces when we start a flash mob. I love the comments I get from mobbers after we've done something. They have so much fun. i wouldn't change that for anything. The only reason I said something about pay is because I wanted to show that it had to be cheap or free.

You could sort of do what they did on The Office, have a bunch of people go up to her one at a time and ask her to marry them before he actually proposes, and then do a crazy flash mob thing, lol.

That is so fun, I wish I lived there, I've always wanted to be a part of a flash mob! I hope you come up with something great, good luck! :-)

Well, first, he should be paying you.. for the supply fee at least. If he were proposing by helicopter, restaurant... he would be paying them ;)

Ideas..... do they have a special place? First date, favorite restaurant, the Riverwalk or something? I would do it there. Do you do it to music? If so, do it to a favorite song if it's one you can dance to. Get everyone to wear those giant plastic engagement rings you can get at the party stores in the bridal shower section. At the end of the dance, they all circle the couple (but not crowd them, maybe a semi circle) waving their engagement rings 'jazz hands' style or throwing flower petals. Then, he proposes while everyone is cheering.

Say she is in the park (how to get her there I don't know). Have random people come up to her and hand her a beautiful rose (or her favorite flower). One at a time. The first person can smile and nod and just hand it to her. 3 minutes later a 2nd person comes and gives her a flower and walks away. A minute later a jogger runs by and gives her one. Each person can do something charming like wink or bow or curtsy. Then suddenly romantic music is playing from a nearby boombox (her favorite song) and out walks her boyfriend who gets on his knee and proposes. All the people reappear and clap. :)

ok so you need some romantic music playing from a boom box?? Like what ever their song is. and then at the end he proposes. ????

Do you want them to be together at the start or she is with a friend and half way through she realizes "he" is part of the mob??

hmmm, I'll keep thinking, all i really know about mobs is from the cell phone commerical and the amsterdam sound of music online mob.

What a neat and memorable way to propose!!

Have everyone bring pink, red or white balloons. Get a copy of John Lennon's "Grow Old Along With Me". It was the last song John wrote and it wasn't finished when he died. Paul McCartney took it back home with him and finished it for John and then returned it to Yoko. It's a beautiful song. And I'm not a big John Lennon fan.

There is a version on this page on youtube by Mary Chapin Carpenter, I perfer that version. John's version is just so haunting.

My friend wrote this and posted it on youtube I love this too.

What are online "flash mobs?"

Oh okay, I thought you were talking about online, flash mobs.

Just be sure it is somewhere ya all can't be arrested at.

Sunrise?
At dusk?
In romantic natural lighting.
everyone kneeling down on one knee... holding up fake plastic rings?
Everyone converging quickly into a circle around them and "freezing."
That would not cost much at all.

I saw a proposal on Godvine the other day. It was very very good. The guy and all his friends got her in the park and they sang and danced and he finally proposed.

If you're singers...

The first thing that jumped to mind is Carmina Burana (from O Fortuna, Carl Orff) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD3VsesSBsw Somewhere in the dark/dusk, maybe along a river walk... with singers first in the natural light, and then colored flashlights. Ideally, each singer handing the about to be proposed a rose, or tossing them at her feet as they move about.

Or maybe a Beauty & the Beast theme

Things to avoid: Loud noises (like fireworks). "Ringing" the couple (feeling trapped... if you want to 'ring' have them stay behind the man. Always leave her an avenue of escape), flashing or whirling lights are another not great thing a lot of the time (the colored flash light idea is for illuminating the singers).

Maybe the ritzy restaurant WOULD let you do it there. If I were a customer at a restaurant, I would love to see a flash mob break out and a guy propose to his girl. It can't hurt to ask.
