Hi--

this has been a difficult year with moves, an abusive marriage, and now divorce and financial challenges. I just failed to take care of myself and I know my appearance has suffered. I am getting ready for another move, going back to school so I can get back into teaching, and desperately needing some changes. I have suddenly sprouted a whole bunch of grey hairs that I don't recall having before. My friends are very kind and don't say much, but they have expressed how I look stressed, etc. I am finally starting to feel like I am getting my sea legs back and could really use a new hairstyle and highlights. My current hairstylist is a lovely person, but just keeps doing the same old, same old. I would love a fresh perspective. I don't need a fancy salon- just someone who can give me a flattering and easily maintained hairstyle without breaking the bank. Oh, and someone who does great highlights for blond going grey....I currently live in Tigard. If you have any recommendations, please forward their info and let me know how much these services might cost. Thanks so much, mamas!

Hi F.,
My sister recently went to the Aveda hair college in Portland's Pearl District. She got her hair cut for under 20 and did not need to tip because the college students aren't allowed to accept them. I'm sure they would do color for a reasonable price and Aveda is pretty progressive. Good luck to you, I'm in need of a makeover myself! - T.

I would highly recommend JET Salon (owner Jennifer E Taylor, thus the JET) in Beaverton (on Hall near the Round). She is very good with color and she is consistent - I can tell you I've been trying to find a good stylist since I moved here from LA in 2002 - I've tried quite a few and been dissapointed over time. I cover up those continuously sprouting grays, and have high and low lights done. She is young and hip. She used to be downtown, but moved to this Beaverton location this year so she could have her own salon. In terms of cost, I get highlights, color pulled through and cut for $120. ###-###-####

I LOVE my girl Heather at Parlour St. Johns (http://www.theparlourstjohns.com/artists.html) I know it's no where close to you, but she's fabulous! Check them out on City Search as well. Cost is reasonable for cuts, $40. I don't recall highlights prices, but you can call and ask!

I have friend who does hair at Richard Herrera in downtown Portland. Her name is Melissa Wilde. She is fabulous with hair, and a really great girl.

Bare Minerals is a great place to go for a make-up makeover and it is as no cost. Of course they will try to get you to purchase their products, which I did, but still they are very nice they do a great job and you can try something different than your usual make-up regimen.

I have no other suggestions for 'external' makeovers but might remind you that although stress can be triggered by or we think caused by external situations outside our control stress comes from no other place than within ourselves. No matter how much of a makeover you might get with your make-up and your hair you will still be you with the same challenges and stressors. I would highly suggest that you invest some of your time into exploring ways not to be stressed out even in the face of stressful situations and events. Trust me on this that you will look younger and feel younger if you can master not being stressed even when faced with situations that you consider stressful. There is a lot of on line help that is free and a lot of places to explore on line that will not only provide suggestions but will provide support for you to learn how not to be stressed out. There is no amount of external changes we can make that will help us become calm assertive people who do not get stressed. Relaxation techniques as well as meditation are both ways to relieve or to avoid stress in your life that you can find help to achieve on line.

Good luck to you.

Blessings,
C.
