Hi L., I grew up in that area, in Ypsi actually. And had frequent nose bleeds as a child. Also had my nose cauterized. My mother upped my vitamin E intake and that seemed to clear it up.
Has anyones child has chronic nose bleeds? My son at 3 1/2 had his nose cauterized, they said it would correct the nose bleeds. Been a year now and he still averages about 3 - 4 a month. It scares me, usually in the middle of the night too. (summer, winter, window open, humidifer, de humidifier.. tried all those. I dont think its from dryness.

sounds like allergies to me too. I used to get them constantly as a child and also while I was pregnant with my son. Extra vitamins and saline drops in the nose will help. good luck!
Hi L.,
Have you taken your son to a good Allergist? My daugther was getting nose bleeds often until she saw an Allergist this past winter. She uses over the counter Ocean Spray nasal spray every morning and before bed, has an air purifier in her bedroom and also takes Singulair and Nasonex (prescriptions) to manage her allergies. Prior to seeing the Allergist she would bleed regularly and pass clots. While the presciptions are for obvious reasons I think the Ocean Spray helps a lot with the bleeding. Just make sure you clean the outside of the applicator with alcohol between uses to avoid spreading infection. Good Luck!

My husband had nosebleeds till he was 22, then I talked him into talking to a doctor about it. The doc cauterized it, he also said to run a humidifyer and suggested the sailine drops. The doc also suggested that if he gets a flare up to put some neosporen on q-tip and rub it up in there, as it is an open wound. Then use vasiline several times a day for a few days. He gets less than one a month now...knock on wood, compaired to several a week. His parents house has wood heat, and they smoked, I don't think that helped anything. (Of course we moved into our own house when we got married)
I feel your pain. I have had chronic nosebleeds for years, been cauterized, tried the humidifier thing, all to no avail. It seems as though my son (who is also three) has the same problem. Unfortunately, there really doesn't seem to be a solution (at least not that I've found after all this time; but if anyone knows of one, let us know!). The only thing that has reduced my occurences is taking iron, 325mg/day. My son takes a multivitamin, which seems to keep them at a minimum. I haven't asked about iron being okay for his age. It's worth a shot if you want to ask your doc first. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I will tell you a trick for stopping the nosebleeds when they do happen -- vinegar (regular or cider) on a cotton ball placed in the nose stops the bleeding right away. I've done this for my son (using a small amount) and it didn't bother him, but it did stop the bleeding.
My daughter gets them frequently and they think it is from allergies. She gets them year round also.
Have you tried giving him saline drops before bed? My brother would have nose bleeds every night when we were kids. I know that he does not get them as often as he used to. So it could just be hertitary and he will out grow it. Is it a little nose bleed or a lot? I would look into checking on an Ears nose and throat specialist, they might have a better idea of what is going on and could put your mind at ease.
Good luck
Oh, to get the stains out there is this great stuff called Zout. It has done wonders on my 3 month old sons stained clothes. I am not sure about how well it works on blood but never hurts to try.
My son who is half Japanese had MANY nosebleeds for many years. I started to make sure he had enough green vegetables. I got a suppliment called Yummy Greens and I found a green drink at Whole Foods. The increase in vitamin K helped when nothing else helped. I mentioned that the children are half Japanese because many of my friends who are Japanese have similar problems which we all solved with extra greens in the children's diet.I do not know if it will help you but extra green vegetables can not be a bad thing!!
I have to agree with Matt's post. OUr daughter started having nosebleeds earlier this summer. A soon as we started her on an iron supplement they stopped.
L., Ellie is 26 mos old and has been having them regularly for about 4 months now. I was assured by two MD's that she would outgrow this, but I Think the cool mist humidifier seems to help some. It is just scary to see it!
L.,
That happened to me when I was a child ALL the time. I would have 3 or 4 a week. Just out of curiousity, is there a smoker in the house? I had to go see ear/nose/throat specialists my entire childhood and was hospitalized once for it because it would not stop bleeding and as soon as I moved out of the house to go to college, they stopped and I have maybe had 1 or 2 in the past 12 years! I think it was because of the side-stream smoke I was breathing daily.
Just my opinion and hope that helps.
I also had nose bleeds as a child and had my nose cauterized at the age of 14. It did not correct my nose bleeds either as I still get atleast a couple a month. My 3 yr old son has inherited the same problem. It is scary to see a child get them on a regular basis, however, his doctor hasn't seemed concerned given my history. I think I will also try the Yummy Greens supplement on my son. Guess it couldn't hurt.
Good luck.
L., I had cronic nosebleeds as a kid and it was due to low iron and a low platelet count in my blood. I was on iron pills as a kids and eventually grew out of it I guess with the platelet issue. could be something to explore.
Hi L.:
Myself and my children all suffer from chronic nose bleeds. I never found the cause. The ENT I went to said my nose could be cauterized but he suggested trying vasaline. Just put some on a qtip and rub it around inside the nose. When we go through spells of bleeds it really helps.
Hope this works for you.

Now i don't know if this would help with the problem. I use to get nose bleeds alot when i was younger usually in the summer. but it was probably due to dry weather. i'd just get them out of the blue. anyways even now in winter a get some not too bad but i do end up with a bit of blood on tissues. i would have to put a bit of vaseline inside my nose. now if you say it's not due to dryness this probably wouldn't work.
oh my gosh I could have written that. My daughter has chronic nosebleeds too she is almost five. I have had her into the doctors 4 times this summer. we are on our last chance of allergy medicine and if that doesn't work we will be sent to an ear nose and throat specialist. Everytime I have taken her they give me a different reason they think it is happening. she too has had both nostrals cauterized. Poor thing. I am so frustrated!
Mom of one, pregnant with twins
I had crazy nose bleeds when I was a a child also. My parents read something not to long ago, and it said if someone has a bloody nose, drop keys down the back of their shirt and that will make a nose bleed stop. I know it sounds crazy, but evidentally it works. I figure it is pretty harmless, so why not give it a shot.
Good luck.
Vitamin C helped with my daughter's nose bleeds. I also buy this yummy Vit C that is a powder poured in water called Emergen-C. You can buy it at Wal-mart, Kroger, Trader Joe's (the cheapest) or any health food store.
