Odd Little Bumps Popping up on Daughter?!

Okay, for the past few weeks I have been noticing these little bumps popping up on my 9mo old, they are not the ‘milk bumps’. They are the size of a med. ball point pen head and a dark pink, they are firm too. They are mostly on the side of her knees/calves; couple on her arms, few on her bottom and one on the back of her heel. I am calling the Dr. today at lunch, but thought I might send an inquiry in to see if any of you have noticed this on your kids?

My husband and I are not allergic to anything, no major allergy issues, and no clue what they are?? Being a new mom, I get a little paranoid and freak a little when I see anything I think doesn’t belong.

Also - They do not seem to bother her, so I don't think they are Chicken Pox, she would be itching then, and she acts like they are not there..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My husband took her to the doctor yesterday, turns out she has a virus, which causes the bumps on her body and ulcers in her mouth. We have her on meds and this should run its course in about a week...good news - they only get this once.

I thought there was a tooth coming in since she was drooling and cranky, turns out it was the ulcers in her mouth [we had no idea those were there]..poor baby!

As Yvette states below, it is Hand, Foot & Mouth desease...scary sounding, but she should be ok after a week or so..EGads!

If the bumps don't seem itchy, they could be Keratosis pilaris. This is a benign skin condition that usually shows up as little white bumps on the backs of the arms in adults. (If you or your hubby have these bumps on your arms/legs, that is probably what it is, as it is heriditary.) In babies, it can also show up on the cheeks of the face, the thighs and calves. My DD has this and the only thing that works to heal hers is a lotion called Aquaphor. The most bothersome part of it, is you expect to feel soft smoothe baby skin, not SANDPAPER on your baby's parts! The lotion REALLY gets my DD's skin back to baby soft.

BTW, hers start out a bit red, then turn white/flesh-tone in a few days. They are very rough at that point, but harder to see. The best thing to do is to put the moisturizer on within three minutes of bathing, but don't bathe everyday. This helps hold the moisture in and soften things up a bit.

Of course, you have the right idea by getting an actual diagnosis by your pediatrician, but you may be able to ask about using this lotion on your little one.

Best wishes! Let us know what the doc says.

It looks like your daughter was diagnosed with Hand, Foot Mouth disease. It's very common in daycare as it is highly transmittable. My daughter had the same thing and got through it quite well. Good luck!

Do the bumps sort of cave in just a little? I'm wondering if it might be moluscum? There is a ton to read online but don't let it worry you - if you start treating it early it is gone before long. If your dr. says that this is what your daughter has please email me so I can tell you what did actually work for us that I bought online after trying things our dermatologist said to try and then she gave me the ok to try this new stuff and it worked great! My email is ____@____.com I have NO connection with the company except for trying and loving their product. Anyone who needs this info feel free to email me. I just need a chance to dig the bottle out and find the name! Good luck finding out what it is!

I wish I could tell you what they are, but I'm responding because I'm seeing the same type bumps pop up on my 19 mo old son. They are mostly on his arms and legs, but occasionally one on his belly and sometimes one or two on his cheeks. They are dark, but he's also hispanic so I'm wondering if they are the same thing. At first I thought they were bites, but I've cleaned his bed several times and have seen nothing. I don't notice any bugs anywhere. He acts like they itch at first and then after he's had them for awhile they go away, but they last much longer than a bug bite would. Let me know what you find out, I'm really curious to know!
