My bagless vacuum is not what it used to be - going on 10 years old. Am looking to purchase a new one that is really good at picking up long dog hair. Price matters somewhat - am willing to pay as long as I can get another 10 years out of it!!!

We have hard wood floors where are 2 labs are. We use a shop vac to suck up the dog hair. Works like a charm.
Look at a Dyson....well worth the money in my opinion!
Dyson Animal...the purple one.
Dyson Animal, the purple one. Mine is 6-7 years old? And I've had 2 golden retrievers, 2 kids and all their friends and a husband the whole time.
Updated: Agree 100% with Frances C. The first time I used my Dyson I was sick at what we had been living with! Truly disgusting!
We have had our Dyson for almost 8 years and it still works great. Although we didn't have a long-haired dog, we had a basset hound and they are one of the worst shedding dogs there are. Our Dyson always worked great at getting his hair up.
Until August, I had 27 years of husky dog hair.....go with a Dyson. You'll not regret it.
I clean houses and I would absolutely go with a Dyson!
We don't have a long haired dog, but our friends do and he sheds like crazy. They splurged and went for one of the Dyson animal vacuums. They love it and say it is worth it. I also wanted to tell you that we used to have a rottweiler and even though his hair wasn't long, he was double coated and shed all the time. It was horrible. We bought the Furminator which was around $40. If you don't already have one, get one! It is great. You will be amazed at the amount of hair that that thing takes off. It helped to cut down on the hair all over the place.
Let me put it this way - We have a Great Pyrenees (Think Polar Bear - that sheds atleast 2 poodles worth of fur a day) and a Persian kitty (Black of all colors). We also have 1 teenager (plus friends) and 2 other kids (plus friends) - oh yeah and my husband. So my Vacuum is running Daily (if not multiple times a day) and I SWEAR by my Dyson Animal - Purple one - I have the one that is "normal" not with the "ball" - either one is good - just a preference.
It is Amazing!!! The price is higher but so Worth it!!! - I used our old vacuum and our shop vacuum in the living room just before I got the dyson (right after the holidays last year) and I thought I got it all (hair and dirt) - I was SHOCKED at how much hair and stuff I missed (GROSS) . I have a friend who has had hers over 8 years and only just got a new one as her daughter "borrowed" it for her new apartment and has decided to keep it LOL
I find that a broom works best.
I use Oreck and a Shop-Vac for the edges....but in all honesty using the regular old broom works the very best!
I recently bought the Dyson dc25 (pet, ball) and I also was shocked at the stuff it picked up. This is the 3rd or 4th vacuum I have owned in the last 14 years and this works better than all of them combined. If price is an issue watch the sales at Target and Bed Bath and Beyond. I bought mine at BBB on sale. Target recently had a coupon out for the Dyson. Also, Costco usually has it at a noticeably lower price.

I just bought a Disan Animal 25 for just that reason. My landlady bought a similar model of the same brand through overstock.com; they have two dogs. We tried the vacuum today and the thing I like is that the fur doesn't go up into the vacuum itself. I really messed up the backs of my hands trying to clean out the vacuum we've been using so when I heard this would not happen, I ordered it through QVC. My younger son works at Lowe's and says they have this brand, too, but I don't know the cost or if it has the same attachments I received. Good luck. I also have some friends with a couple of cats who have the same brand, and they find it to be great.
I checked out consumer reports and it reported that the suction power of a dyson was not as much as some bagged vacuum's.. have never had a dyson though. I went with a Hoover Windtunnel self propelled (blue one) and absolutely love it. 1 dog with a double coat and 1 long haired cat.
Bissell Pet Hair vac!! I will never buy another vacuum again :) I've had mine for 6 years and love it!!
My Kirby is 10 years old and still going strong and still picking up the dog and cat hair!
