Pancreatitis - Confused!

I have been having bloating and general discomfort in my abdomen for about 3 weeks. No fever, no diarrhea, no vomiting, just not feeling right in the mid-section. Decided to go to the doctor on Tuesday. She did an exam, ordered lots of blood work, and gave me an abdominal xray. The only thing of concern was that my amylase and lipase levels were slightly elevated.

Had an abdominal ultrasound yesterday. Everything looks fine but it confirmed pancreatitis. No other abnormalities. From what I understand, the main causes of pancreatitis are gallstones and alcoholism - I do not have either. I very rarely have a drink.

Nurse said that doctor indicated that I could wait and see how I feel and then get a CT scan in a couple of weeks. What will the CT scan show that the ultrasound can't? Will it explain the WHY of this situation for me? Is there a course of treatment based on what causes it or is all treatment the same? If I am feeling better should I get the CT scan done anyway? This whole thing seems so out of the blue. I am a healthy weight, do not eat a high fat diet, exercise, and drink plenty of water.

As per the nurses instructions, I am eating bland, easy to digest foods and in small amounts. What else can I do to help my poor pancreas? Anyone else have this happen and then it just resolved in its own?

I would love to hear about your experience with it, either as a patient or medical provider.

Thank you so much for your information. And yes, I have a call in to the doctor but I believe she is off tomorrow so probably will not be able to discuss with her until Monday.

I am concerned that my pancreas is getting damaged and I don't feel great but I can function.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I appreciate the response so far.

Marda, this info comes straight from the Mayo Clinic - Gallstones, produced in the gallbladder, can block the bile duct, stopping pancreatic enzymes from traveling to the small intestine and forcing them back into the pancreas. The enzymes then begin to irritate the cells of the pancreas, causing the inflammation associated with pancreatitis.

That is not my case but gallstones can be the cause.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and ideas everyone!

I had a case of acute pancreatitis-it was painful but like you, I could function, so it must have been a mild case. My doctor confirmed it via lab work and other symptoms. She indicated that sometimes this can be caused by a virus or bacteria. I don't drink nor did I have a history of any digestive problems. It came on suddenly but I waited a couple of days before going to the doctor. The doctor told me to do the bland diet, stay off fatty foods and things should improve. Sure enough, it did. The only thing I did was go back in after a week and had my blood work done again. Since all was back to normal, no other intervention was needed. That was 8 years ago, and I've never had another bout of it.

You are right. Gallstones can cause pancreatis. I should've researched before hitting send.

Pancreatis is an infection or an irritation andn can be caused in different ways. My daughter had her pancreas taken out b..ecause the pain was intense. She neither drinks or had stones.

Ask your doctor what might've caused this in you.

BTW why would gallstones cause pancreatis? They either stay inside the the gallbladder or try to pass thru the vessels. They sometimes try to come out which often causes pain but don't necessarily cause pain. The pancreas helps to digest carbs and sugars. the gallbladder helps with fat digestion. I don't think the two organs send anything to the other.

I suggest you study the make up of the body. Knowing more about your body will help you in maintain good health.

My sister got acute pancreatitis at 19. It seemed to be excruciating. She spent several days in the hospital.

She was otherwise healthy and not a heavy drinker. The doctor thought it may have been an infection that caused it, but I am not sure they ever got a definite answer. They treated her with pain meds and IV fluids until she got better, it took a few days in the hospital then a few more at home.

Sorry I don't have more information for you. Hope you feel better soon!

I worked with someone whose husband underwent a medical test which ultimately resulted in causing his pancreatitis.
He was bed ridden in the hospital for - I kid you not - 6 months.
He did get better eventually and completely recovered but it was a very stressful time for my friend - they really thought he was going to die.
He ate nothing in that time - all his nutrition he got through an IV.

The way I understand it, the pancreas creates digestive enzymes but for some reason they sometimes activate too soon and start breaking down the pancreas itself which becomes inflamed and that's real bad because you NEED your pancreas - we can't live without it.
It's possible a gall stone blocked a bile duct but not necessarily - anything could have irritated the duct so it swelled shut for a time.
That they still want you to eat means they don't think it's bad enough to warrant a total digestive system rest (feed you through an IV for a long while).
Follow your doctors instructions.
I would think clear soup broth would be a good idea and very easy to digest.

Pancreatitis will cause excruciating right sided back pain. 99.9% if time hospitalization is required and food is not allowed. ThT dies not sound like you. 2nd opinion would be where I was headed.
