Passing Out in Young Children

My 20 month old seems to pass out very easily if she hits her head even moderately hard. The first time was when she fell down the steps before she was a year old. She built up a scream, stopped and then went out for a few seconds. Then she came to and started crying. It was a little scarey, but she seemed normal afterward. Since then, it has happened almost a dozen times. She slips, hits her head, and passes out exactly the same way. She just did it tonight, but it was a little scarier because she was out for a little longer than usual (a little under a minute maybe). After she came to, I nursed her and she went to sleep. I'm assuming she keeps getting a mild concusion. I talked to my mom who said my sister did this when she was little to, but outgrew it. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

If she is actually passing out, then I would be really worried, but to be honest, it doesn't sound like she's got a mild concusion. It sounds like she's a breath holder. My friend's son did this, and it is a little scary. You can kinda see it soming though. Next time you see her about to pass out or looking dizzy, try blowing in her face to make her take a breath (that's what the doctor told my friend to do). It worked for him. Under all circumstances though, talk to you ped!!!

it actually sounds like something that has to do with her heart, or her blood pressure, nothing serious, my brother since he was little will pass out when he pukes, he is now 17 and still does it, a lot of the elderly will pass out when they puke, and pass out with a slight bump on the head, children are the same way, she just seems to be getting so upset, scared, or startled by the bump initially and her little system is not super big or strong yet so she passes out, just like the elderly who's systems are compromised, that is why when your sister grew up she grew out of it

I have not gone through this but my first gut instinct would be to call your doctor - especially if you think she's had a mild concusion ... those can be very dangerous and you want to be sure that there is nothing wrong with her head or any swelling that could lead to someting problematic. The docot may want to do a CAT scan or Xray to ensure everything is OK. It could just be nothing but I'd call the doc to be sure. good luck ... hope everything is fine with the little one.

ok im sorry but i dont think thats normal. like you said maybe it happens to some kids but you should take her to see her doctor or the er next time so she can be checked out right away. like other moms said you should have them do the cat scan just to double check on the brain. you for sure should not let her go to sleep for at least an hour after hitting her head. one time she might not wake up! omg this has got to be so hard on you. i wish you the best of luck and i hope she is ok and will grow out of it.

I would certainly get her into the pediatrician immediately about this. This doesn't sound normal and as another mom said, if it's a concusion, she should not be going to sleep. I have never heard of anything like this in a child & it does sound like there might be some kind of problem if this is occuring every time she hits her head. It certainly cannot hurt to talk to the doctor about this. It's better rule things out than wonder what's going on. Good luck & please keep us posted.

Take her to the Dr. for a cat scan! The first time she fell down the stairs she should have bben to the dr. Depending on where she hit her head and how hard that could do permanent damage. Too many concussions could cause long term problems. It is better to be safe then sorry when it comes to something like that. Take her to the dr. and you really shouldn't let them go to sleep after a fall especially if you think it was a concussion. Also another thing to look for is if she bumps her head make sure the area where she hits forms a bump rather than sinking inward. If it sinks in take her to the E.R. right away. I have 3 boys and they have hit their heads alot!! I used to rush to the E.R. everytime but I have learned what to look for now.

OK, that is definitely something I would talk to her ped about. That is very concerning. I would freak if my dd did that.

My brother did it every time he fell...even if it was a knee or something. He out-grew it. My mom could never leave him anywhere without people who didn't know though...they often freaked out and called an ambulance! :) Actually, his also started after a fall down the steps before he was walking. The doctor checked him out multiple times because my mom was concerned, nothing seemed wrong. Wouldn't hurt to inform the doctor and see that there is nothing else going on though.

I would get her looked at by medical personnel. I would even have them do a cat scan and make sure there is not something serious going on. Also, if she is having mild concusion, then letting her go to sleep is not a good thing. The doctor's have always told us, to check on our son every hour if he must go to sleep to make sure we can wake him up.

They take concussions very seriously. Please have her checked out.

First off, you should really be talking her pediatrician about this. I don't think it is normal. Don't be suprised if a Neurologist isn't consulted, it sounds like seizures might be involved somewhere. My son has seizures and he is on meds for them, so it is controllable. I would call the DR first thing in the morning. If you think there is a concussion, you should take her to the ER, if I remember correctly, you aren't supposed to sleep after a concussion. Good Luck, hope all goes well with your little one.

Hi S.,
That sounds very scary! I would suggest seeing her pediatrician ASAP. Not to scare you anymore but it sounds like mild seizures. Please seek medical attention as soon as you can. I would love to know the turn out! I wish you all the best.

Please see your ped. That is so scary. If she has a concusion I hardly think she should be sleeping. I would demand CT scans to make sure she is ok.
