My daughter just had her period and the school only lets them use the bathroom once a day, but with the times my daughter changes her pads and such that won't work. Also though, my daughter refuses to let me tell her teachers, especially the males. I NEED HELP!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, their breaks between classes are 3 minutes, and their lunch 15 and I want her to eat. If I e-mail the school my daughter would easily find out. If all her teachers just stated letting her "go" she would definitely think something was up. And, she is in middle school so there is no recess.

Once a day?!? Are you kidding?? I would have been protesting that from day one!

The school my daughter attends has bathrooms that are easily accessible from every classroom and they don't even have to ask permission to go there! She's in elementary school.

Wow, kids (people) need to go when they need to go. Is this an elementary school? Aren't they having "accidents" with this ridiculous policy? What if a kid has a bladder infection or other medical issue...or just had an extra glass of orange juice for breakfast?

I think I would take this right to the principal, or top administrator at the school. I would describe in detail what they are going to start seeing (blood stains on pants and skirts) if they don't let girls (all students) use the bathroom as needed, and without any embarrassing requests needing to be made to do it.

they only let the kids use the bathroom once a day?, what do they think they are bergen-belsin? tell her teachers that she will have to be allowed to use the bathroom more then once a day, or they can pay for the dry cleaning bills, their choice. you know the teachers are going to the bathroom whenever they feel like it, so why such a unbendable rule for the students, if they refuse to hold the teachers to the same rigid standards??

Provisions need to be made for all the children at school-the fact that their bodily functions have been usurped , I would say, is the final straw-I frankly, have never heard of such a practice-it's a violation of a basic right-I don't doubt you-but I couldn't believe what I was reading. What kook came up with this?

Don't you just LOVE this rule? (It's starting to crop up all over, along with the whole no running at recess, no talking during lunch, and limiting each child to a certain # of questions per day -typically between 1&3). Why on EARTH has the current crop of administrators gotten into education when it's apparent they either hate children or are power freaks who take it out on the only audience that won't laugh in their faces??? They could never get away with this with adults. Hostile work environment just scratches the surface. But I digress.

Talk w/ the principle. And other parents.

Fortunately in middle school a lot of these rules go out the window, since they can use the bathroom between class times.

sounds like a school-wide issue to me - many children need to use the bathroom more than once in a school day. i would speak with the principal or other administrator, not classroom teachers.

ONLY allowing a child, 1 bathroom break a day... is PREPOSTEROUS!
I would complain about that!

Next, how old is your daughter?
With that in mind, a School, SHOULD realize, that girls this age have their periods and NEED to change and GO to the bathroom as need be.
To limit the students to only 1 bathroom break a day, is really really ridiculous.

I would, put things in writing, notify the school of this problem.
What the heck is a girl supposed to do???
And what if their pad leaks, because they cannot go to the bathroom???
How embarrassing to say the least.

Kids or even adults, do not pee or have bodily needs, only once a day.

This is a real problem.
It is just NOT humane nor rational.

The school rules, needs a change.

Go talk to the principal. This is a very unreasonable rule. I have never heard of such nonsense. There are kids who have urinary tract problems who cannot hold their urine for more than two hours.
If she cannot go to the toilet you might have to keep her home on her heavy days.
Fascism has descended on our public schools. If we don't fight it our kids are going to be as damaged as the children who grew up in the conquered lands of the Soviet Union.

They are only allowed to use the bathroom once a day??? Do they have any breaks they can also go, or at lunch? If not, I'd be protesting this rule on general purposes (without bringing up her period) because it seems highly unfair. I totally agree that they shouldn't be allowed to go every ten minutes just to get out of class, but I, as an adult, normally go to the bathroom three or four times in the amount of times children are at school.

I am teacher and I think this rule is terrible. You need to band together with some other parents and work on changing this. How many adults in that school use the bathroom only once a day? If your school has a PTA or PTSA that is a good place to start working with other parents. If the principal is not responsive to your request then go to his/her supervisor.

At our school the kids all have to bring water bottles and are encouraged to drink throughout the day. I can't imagine one bathroom break with all that drinking going on. For health reasons the kids should be going at least every 2 hours. Staying hydrated is very important. If you limit their bathroom breaks they all cut down on water and are probably all dehydrated. Not good.

If all else fails, I'd talk to the teacher via email without your daughter knowing. It's such a basic thing and the teacher won't make a big deal out of it. They just need to know that she might need to leave class every now and then. In my opinion, they should just ask to go and get to go. I remember our teachers having a policy of having to wait for the last person to get back before we could go. How silly for those kids who are well behaved and just have to pee. Grrrr.

Your daughter isn't the only girl at that school who gets her period.
I would call the office and ask the secretary how things like that get handled. They understand these things and know how to be discreet.
If your daughter is in middle school, they usually go from class to class and have a few minutes in between to go to the restroom and take care of these types of things. They're not going to tell girls they can't change their pads. It's not necessary to do it every 30 minutes, but girls for generations have been having periods at school and it all works out.
I know your daughter doesn't want you saying anything, but ask one of the ladies in the office and I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you what to have your daughter do.

It will work out.

Best wishes.

For starters, she should be using the bathroom more than once during the school day, just for her health. If she isn't allowed to use the bathroom, then she is dehydrated and that can lead to illness.
I'd talk to the school principal and get better answers. If there are none I'd then go to the school district superintendant and let them know there is a health issue going on.
When I was in school (Oh, so many years ago!) we had breaks (recess) in which to use the bathroom, lunch and could get a hall pass. Sounds to me that there is some sort of mis-communication going on here.

I have boys that age, but will be dealing with all this with our daughter down the road in a few years. I think I would start with her school counselor, if it is a female. They see kids for all kinds of issues, and we've found ours to be very nice and helpful. You could also check with the parents of some of her girlfriends who may have had the same issue. Perhaps she could use the bathroom at PE (I know she'd have to be fast) and at lunch if they are not too close together. If those options don't work, she needs to let you talk to a teacher or two. Try for the female ones. If she went quickly between classes (make sure she has what she needs for class already so she doesn't have to stop at her locker) I doubt she'd be that late, maybe not late at all, but if she was they'd know why.

First of all, it's just absurd that her school only allows one bathroom break per day! Is there a school nurse that you can pull into the conversation as an ally? I would address the issue with administration as a health issue. Kids need to be properly hydrated and if they are, they are going to need to use the restroom more than once in a typical school day. That way, it doesn't focus the problem on her, but on all the kids. If they still refuse to budge, look into getting your daughter a menstrual cup. It's a medical grade silicone cup that inserts similarly to an OB tampon and only needs to be emptied 2-3 times in a 24 hour period. I've been using one for over a year and I love it!

What kind of school only lets the kids use the bathroom once a day ? This is ridiculous ! I would tell the principal that your daughter will use the bathroom as many times as she wishes throughout the day, or she will defecate all over the school halls (and they can clean it) - as well as throw used pads in the halls.....I would say that, to make your point that it is barbaric that they are not letting a child tend to their needs. If the school wants to be difficult, I would take this to the school board - personally, homeschooling might be the option you want to take when dealing with mindless idiots who make asinine rules.

I have a question. Is this a public or private school? If public, please fight this rule! Get a whole bunch of parents involved so your daughter won't feel like she's under a spotlight. This has got to be against district or state guidelines.

If this is a private school, I'd find a new one. The schedule sounds way too demanding for kids. Even adults get more of a break than this! 15 minutes for lunch!!! Outrageous!!!

I suggest that you check with the school. I've not heard of limiting bathroom use. She would have to ask for a pass and perhaps she's too embarrassed to do that? Does she change classes during the day? Perhaps she's saying she doesn't have enough time in between classes and thus would have to be excused and she's embarrassed to say she was using the rest room..

IF they're only allowed to use the bathroom once during the day (again I question this) you could go thru the nurse who would issue her a pass for medical reasons.
