Post DepoProvera Injection Problems

My 21 year old female, cousin started using Depo Provera injections approximately 18 months ago. Her last injection was in September 2009. She hasn't had a period since, which her GYN said was normal (may take up to a year for her period to return). In May, however, her GYN gave her Provera to "withdraw" bleed her before starting her on birth control pills. She never did have a period even after taking the full dose of Provera. Her GYN told her it was OK to start the birth control pills anyway so she did...about 6 weeks ago. Now, for the past 3 weeks or so, she is having frequent bouts with nausea and vomiting. She thought she might be pregnant and has taken numerous over the counter pregnancy tests and her GYN even gave her a blood test and all have been negative but she STILL is having frequent nausea and vomiting. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms post Depo and beginning of birth control pills? I have taken provera numerous times to bring on my period and occassionally needed a double dose but always ended up having a period. I'm concerned she is being overloaded with hormones and needs to have a period and shed her uterine lining and "start fresh". Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

The pill can make people have some pregnancy symptoms especially when they first start. Breasts can swell, nausea all of it. If they're making her that sick, she should talk to her dr about a different kind of pill. There's a million out there and each formula is a little different. She may be happier on another pill.

Depo is E-V-I-L!
I was on it for about a year, then when I got off of it I bled off & on (every few days) for weeks before I got on the pill to straighten my periods & bleeding out. I would never get on that stuff again.
I didn't have any nausea or vomiting.

God bless!

Sounds like she is sensitive to estrogen. I too was taking the depo, for about a year, and got off of it because I gained 30 lbs. Doc switched me to a regular pill, and i was sick for the whole 3 weeks till the week of placebo pills was up. I've tried numerous types of low dose pills, and they still seem to affect me. Nuva ring was a little better, Mirena IUD was the best since it doesn't have estrogen. My pregnancy was a nightmare, I was sick most of the time because of the elevated estrogen in my body. I think it's a pretty common thing, and the doc can recommend a good alternative for her.

Isn't depo provera the injection you have every 3 months? If she had a full dose, which sounds like she had a larger dose, then she has more hormones in her system already when she started the bc pills six weeks later.

I've not had any experience with depo except for my daughter used the injections for birth control but quit because she was having an uncomfortable amount of cramping and bleeding.

If this were my daughter, I'd recommend getting a second opinion or at the very least ask for a pill with a different make up.

It's my understanding that the reason women don't have a period or at least don't usually have a period is that the hormone level stops the uterine wall from building up a lining. Once an egg is implanted the lining becomes thicker and enriched. Common sense seems like you'd want to get rid of the old lining but perhaps there really isn't any old lining and won't be enough lining to produce a period until she's been off the depo for longer. Just a thought.

Hi, My fusture sister in law had the exact same problem but with less time in between. She simply changed from depo to pills within a 2 month time frame and had a severe problem with the transition. The transition caused her to stop taking the bc pills for a short period (a couple of weeks), then began again and the symptoms came back (the nausea). she had been to the doctor and had the blood test and it did come back negative for pregnancy. The problem persisted and she had an ultrasound 2 weeks later. It did show signs of an ovarian cyst that had ruptured so they tagged this as the cause. Still with no period, a week later she took a pregnancy test. Postive! We have a little girl due on the 11th of November despite the tests and the ultrasound. Due to the horrible transition from depo to the pill she had enough time to conceive..So do not rule out pregnancy yet and be sure the they continue to look at this as a possible cause for the symptoms she has been having. Make sure the if she has not been dilligent with the birth contol pills that she understand that even without the bleeding, she could have ovulated.

good luck :)
