Hello everyone,

My 8 yr. old daughter has been waking up recently with stomach aches that have occasionially caused her to vomit. Since March, she's lost four days of school because of this and she also vomited this past Monday (Memorial Day), which she would have missed again, if it was a school day.

She also complains that her stomach hurts after she eats. I've taken her to the doctor several times for this and for other symptoms that I won't go into here (some of them are in prior posts) she's had several tests and even an endoscopy for reflux . . . but I think this is being caused by post nasal drip. She does have seasonal allergies and has some acid reflux . . . and in talking to some people and doing some online research today, I've learned how excess post nasal drip can cause stomach aches in people, including vomiting. She woke up with this feeling today and I took her to the doctor again. The doctor suggested that starting tonight . . . to try Nasonex and Previcid for two weeks to see if it helps her with her symptoms. I've read that post nasal drip and acid reflux are related and can cause stomach discomfort. I also read that drinking plenty of water helps thin the mucous and can help releive symptoms. I have to keep reminding her to drink water, she doesn't like drinking it much . . . I was wondering if any of you have experienced this with your children and if there is anything else you tried that has helped . . . maybe something natural. I really don't want to keep her on the medications, if there is another way to treat it.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

T.

My two younger kid will throw up when they have excessive mucus. They get a cold and their noses start to run. As soon as they cough --- blech, normally only in the morning. Looking at it you can see it is all mucus. We use Mucinex Jr to cut through it, but it usually lasts only a few days.

I have that almost daily. I throw up at least three days a week.

Try using a saline nasal spray such as Ocean or a knockoff once or twice daily. Using the spray daily has cut back significantly on my allergy symptoms and subsequent sinus infections.

yup my daughter did this last sunday night. she had a cold with some pretty gross boogers. said her tummy hurt before bed and woke up in the middle of the night and puked. she was perfectly fine after that and she does get sensitive to access mucous draining in her stomach. I am the same way although i wake up because i feel it draining and i have to swallow over and over and over just to get it down my throat. its gross but i dont throw up although sometimes i want to. More of a gag factor than an upset stomach but when I was younger I had a lot of stomach aches :(

Liquid Children's real Sudafed. I get it from a small family owned pharmacy. They can order what they want. The large chains can only order a few things from a list. They have what they get warehoused somewhere and are not allowed to order anything else.

My pharmacist orders this for us and I buy 2 bottles every month or so. I use it, the kids use it too. I give everyone half a dose to keep the medicine part down.

The Sudafed thins the mucous in the sinuses and throat. It keeps the goo from sticking to the throat inside and waking people up gagging.

The other meds will dry up the mucus..Sounds good right? Have you ever had thick sticky mucus draining? It is worse than the runny stuff by far.

Use a neti pot to irrigate the nose - flush out the nose of mucous - after a steam treatment - fill bowl w/ hot water an lean over it w/towel covering head & bowl. It may be uncomfortable or tickle the nose @ 1st but it truly works. And there are no side effects as you are just using warm water - no medicine (OTC or prescribed). If you don't want to purchase a neti pot, you can use an infant medicine dropper. Lean head over the sink and pour water in one nostril so it exits out the other nostril. Do this twice a day until the runny/stuffy nose is gone. We do this all the time @ my house w/great success & no complaints from the kids (8 & 4 ys old). Good luck.
