Please dont get mad at me for this post. I am not trying to single anyone out or offend, or anything negative whatsoever. I am just a little worried about some safety issues. But, do you think its a bad idea to advertise on the internet that you have guns in your home, what kind of gun and where its located? I know that lately with all the accidents on the news are sparking lots of questions, but sometimes I get worried that we put too much info out on the internet. I am speaking from experience. I have had someone stalk me on this very website and found out wayyyy too much info about me. There are some very crazy people out there. Do you think we need to be more cautious?

Depends on what other info you release/have released.
A lot of people don't know they release small bits of info all the time about who they are. It's not just one piece of info, its a lot (even small details you think are insignificant) added up.
I think we need to be more cautious, but people need to know the types of info to be cautious about too.
Good Luck to you. =)

I think some people are not too smart about what info they let be public domain. Even on this site you see questions,, oh sure,, "JFF".. How long married? Whats hubby do? What insurance do you have? whats your maiden name? whats your middle name? Do you like your job, what is it? How old? Birthday? Siblings? Do you use credit cards? Do you own or rent? When do you take vacations?
Im waiting for Whats your social security number? How long before someone puts it all together and has enough information to steal your identity.

I have belonged to sites since 1998. I used to use the same nickname and email at all of them. Google came along and someone wrote me a private message on another site. It talked about how two or three years ago I said x and now I am saying y. My opinion had changed because I learned my way didn't work. It totally made me think I was being followed on the internet with my anonymous email and internet nickname. I changed the email, nickname, city I was from, date of birth, age, hometown, and removed identifying information.
I never check private messages. I usually avoid responding to those who might cause problems.
My neighbors tell everyone "We don't need a security system because we keep loaded handguns in every room." Someone broke in to get them. He didn't want the big, new tvs or computers. I understand your point.

I agree with you, that we put way to much info on the internet. I have backed way way off my fb account because of this, although I've been lucky and haven't been stalked or anything. But it's much easier to find out info if we're always posting it.

Yes, we do. It's very easy to think that we're insulated and that this is a private site or that any online community we visit and become comfortable in is secure and safe. People forget all of the thousands of lurkers that are reading the posts. For every person who posts, there are probably a few thousand people lurking. Most have good intentions, but many do not. And many of us leave an easy trail of personally identifying information leading right to our doorsteps.

Yes, people share too much on the internet all the time. Secret screen name, or not, if someone really wants to "get you", then they'll find a way to do it. The internet makes it really easy for them to do so. Unfortunately, some people are too naive or have no common sense to look at the internet for the dangerous place it can be.

I think it's important for everyone to be cautious. It is totally possible for some stalker/lurker to slowly collect bits of information about someone by reading all their questions and responses, down to the point where they say they like to go walking at ___ park at __ time.

I don't have my real name or my real city posted, and try to keep that info disconnected from my other details, in my online posts. There are psychos out there, far far outnumbered by normal folks, sure, but it only takes one.

I agree with you that we all have to be cautious about what we say and do---anywhere. Sometimes people become too comfortable and let their guard down online and they run into trouble that way. I am sorry you had that awful experience! Did you get the help you needed or are you still having trouble with them??? GL

We don't do fb for this reason. We prefer to keep things more private. My husband might flip if he read all that i post on here. granted, I have never stated whether I have or don't have guns in my home nor have I mentioned where i might keep them if i did have one. I do have opinions on guns and state that opinion. But no one on this website needs to know that much about me.

oh and I guess I could change my name on here. But ya know how many Jess / Jessie / Jessica / Jessena / Jessika s there are in Texas? Even in the Spring Branch area I bet there are a ton. I've never said my husband's name nor my last name on here. I think I'm anonymous. I could be wrong. My picture's up here, but I dunno. Maybe I should change my picture?

I'm a little confused as to how you would advertise that particular fact.

And, how would you say it without sounding paranoid or weird or aggressive?

I dunno. I guess if you can come up with a funny way to say it, then sure say you have guns (and maybe the type). I wouldn't post the location, however. That's just asking for someone to steal them. That's like saying, "Hey, I've got these valuable items hiding in my underwear drawer. Please break into my house, steal them, and pawn them. Oh, and please do as much property damage as possible to my home in your quest for drug money. Thanks!"

Just my $0.02. I'm getting REALLY tired, so I hope that didn't come off as either obnoxious or incomprehensible. =)

Good luck!

I figure knowing we have a gun and what type is a deterent. I will never reveal my location for this reason. I always limit what I say on the internet. I never tell all like the location of my guns. if they were to walk in my house they wouldn't be able to find them but I know where they are out of sight out of mind but this is a good post for those who do reveal too much information.

First off I don't see anyone giving out their address and saying "I have a colt .45 and I keep it in my hall closet with the ammo in the bedroom drawer.." Also, I'm not really sure what you are talking about in reference to the "accidents in the news" and what they have to do with an online community of moms?

As long as you are comfortable with the information YOU put out, then who cares what other people do. It's not your info, so who cares.
