any information? my son has been having reactions to a variety of foods, his cheeks will get really red and then he gets a fever, almost immediately after he consumes stuff like ketchup, and as of last week cheese puffs. Is anyone else dealing with this? i am curious to find a pediatrician or allergist to verify - also his tantrums - and anger - i have read that red dye #40 may be linked.. Any advise would be greatful at this point..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have an appointment on the 21st - with an allergist, hopefully it will be more than just a consultation. I have been keeping pictures with descriptions of what he has eaten in a food diary. - i am going to print those out and bring them with my new patient forms. I appreciate EVERYONES input on this matter... I have researched and found out so much.. thanks for all the referrals, they too have come in handy.!!

Hi Stace,

Sounds like you're on the right path! I don't have any experience personally with the problem you're experiencing, but have heard similar stories. It's amazing what chemicals, like red dye #40 can do to our bodies! We have food allergies in our home and have a wonderful allergist in the east valley if you'd like his info! Take Care,

Has this been happening for a while or just recently? I ask because my gf just had her mom here for a visit and colored eggs early with the kids. He of course being 2 got lots of the color on him. He immediately broke out in a rash on his cheeks. Then the next day his trunk and arms. She was sure it was the red dye. The rash would appear to get better then get worse again. After day 3 of this she went to the doctor and found out it wasn't the dye but Fifths Disease. Good luck~

I don't have any research to show you, but I have heard some pretty bad stuff on various websites about red #40. I have completely cleaned the stuff out of our house in all of its various manifestations (along with hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and other food additives), because I refuse to have our family consuming the junk. It takes some work, but it's worth it!! I know our diet is much healthier now than it was before I took inventory.

You know I love this sight it really helps moms get more aware. I never would of thought Red dye #40 could be the cause of my sons rash. Its around the mouth and nose-cheek area. And my son loves ketch-up and pizza but he broke out in a rash when it gets on skin. Its amazing the toxins in our food. After reading this I am now going in my kitchen and getting rid of certain items. My son also has violent outbirsts at times that are not like him. I had watched a program on tv once Kelly Preston promotes a book by L. Ron Hubbard called "Clean body,Clean mind that really helped her kids and herself her and husband John Travolta are big on childrens health. Diet causes alot of child hood illnesses and adha ect. I would go to your ped. Im going to mine, it happened last night with Pizza, but not all pizza does this. But my little clown face needs help and a Dr. can tell us more. Good luck. Talk soon.

Stace, Please get to an allergist ASAP. I was a child with food allergies that affected my temperment. I was a horrible child. Once my parents figured out the food allergies, I was human again almost immediately. My whole family sees Dr. R. Shimamoto in Gilbert, Baseline and Val Vista. His office is San Tan Allergy ###-###-#### and he is amazing with the kids and also sees adults.
The biggest culprit is usually dairy. As hard as it may be, run a trial week and remove all dairy from his diet. My husband is severely Lactose intolerent so I have to read labels on everything I buy. Dairy also is listed as Whey on some ingredient labels. You will be amazed about what does and does not have milk in it. As long as you substitute Lactaid or Dairy Ease milk for regular milk you can make lots of normal recipes. There is a lot I can tell you about this from my own experiences, if you'd like to talk, you can email me. M.. ____@____.com

Hi Stace,

Both my son and I have allergies to Red dye. all dyes are a problem; however Red 40 is most common in food. Dyes are neurotoxins and can cause behavioral problems, headaches, aggression, and other neurological issues.

I recommend avoiding any product with dyes in it.

Warm Regards,
G.

Not sure about the dye. But, my 4y.o. has been seeing AZ Allergy Associates at 705 S. Dobson Road on Frye/Dobson (near Chandler Regional) ###-###-#### for 2 years now. He sees Dr. Duane Wong. He has been skin tested twice - and each year more allergies than the next, we've recently been to a nutritionist because he also has autism, and trying to determien whether or not he should do the autism diets or not. There's just too much to eliminate and then there'd be nothing for him to eat. So he's going to get re-evaluated in April.

But, also, he has environmental allergies too. He's actually getting his ear tubes and adenoids removed in a couple of weeks. Hopefully that will eliminate the daily nose picking too.

If you want more info, email me.
Good Luck!
