Removing Silly Putty from My Daughter's Jeans

My granddaughter got a container of Silly Putty on her jeans and it melted and stuck like bubble gum, only worse, because it's stickier. I put them in the freezer to see if it would harden and come off, but it was still gooey and would not release. Anyone out there with a clue for me? HELP!

What can I do next?

Dear N......place jeans in a bucket and pour "Lestoil", full strength, directly on pants. Add little water, to cover. Let sit for a few hours, then return to aggitate garment. Wash thoroughly in hot, soapy wash, rinse and see if that putty released 100 %. This product gets out lots of stains, including, lipstick, gum and tar. Grandma of 6 :-}

hello. my son went to bed one night with green silly putty and when i found him in the morning it was all over his sheets, pillowcase, and pj's. i spread the cloth out on a hard surface (tile floor) and scraped all the residue off with a credit card. then i sprayed the remaining discolored areas with oxyclean spray, and everything came out fine.

As silly as it may sound... baby wipes! I taught preschool for several years and encountered this problem many many times. One time we just happened to have a tub of baby wipes handy & amazingly they worked. For whatever reason it worked better than anything else. Baby wipes work to take many things out of clothing, hair, and off of skin (such as permanent marker) that you probably wouldn't even think to use them on. Kinda scary and makes you wonder whats really in them! It will take some time and patience since its set in, but it should work.

Hi N.,

My "weapon of last resori" is Lestoil cleaner. Saturate the silly putty spot with it,let is sit for awhile, then launder in hottest water safe for fabric. DON'T dry in dryer until you are sure silly putty is gone.

I'd try the stuff the other ladies suggested first, especially the crayola linnk.

Good luck!

Using a dull knife, gently scrape off as much of the putty as you can. Then spray a lubricating oil over the area and wait a bit. Spray again and use cotton balls to lift the stain. If anything remains, saturate a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol, blot the area and rinse with water. Still some residue? Apply a dry-cleaning solvent, then launder as you normally would.

I know that peanut butter works to get gum out of hair...personal experience. So I don't know why it wouldn't work to get silly putty off of jeans.

Good luck!! Hopefully you'll respond back and let us know what worked for you.

I’ve heard rubbing alcohol or clear hand sanitizer removes silly putty from cloth and material.

Also here is a link to the pdf on removing crayola products (includes silly putty) from various surfaces...
http://www.crayola.com/canwehelp/staintips/pdf/full.pdf

Here is what they say about removing putty from fabric:
Materials you need:
• Dull knife or metal spoon
• WD−40® (car part lubricant)
• Liquid dishwashing detergent
• Cotton balls
• Rubbing alcohol
• Soft cloth or sponge
Procedure:
Scrape off excess Silly Putty with a dull−edge knife or metal spoon. Spray with WD−40 and let stand a few minutes. Scrape excess Silly Putty with dull−edge knife or metal spoon.
Re-spray with WD−40 and wipe off stain with cotton balls. If any stain remains, saturate a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol, blot the stain and rinse. Wipe any remaining residue or remaining stain with a damp sponge or cloth moistened with liquid dishwashing detergent.

Good luck!

Hi N.,
When my 25 year old son was about 6, he got bubble gum in his hair. I got it out with a product called Basic H, made by Shaklee. I have been using Shaklee cleaning and laundry products for 25 years, and selling them for 20.
All of the products are earth-friendly, kid-friendly and cost-effective. here is a great link to find out a little more, you can contact me from the site if you have questions
