Scared of Sinkholes!

My family and I might be relocating to the Tampa area, but Tampa is known to have the most sinkholes in Florida. I am wondering if all of you moms who live in the Tampa area feel safe from sinkholes, or if you constantly live in fear of them? This is very frightening for me to think about.

What can I do next?

I currently live in central Florida and I don’t worry about sink holes since they can happen anywhere on the earth. I moved here from PA a few years ago and Harrisburg (I think) had like 40 sink holes last year.

The most recent one in the Lakeland area was extremely rare and the only recorded death. I often wonder if that sink hole started a while back and he ignored it until it was too late (I think it opened up under his bed). Most are small and not that deep where you can easily get out of your home and then have the sink hole repaired (they fill it in).

I love living here in Florida even more now that I live among the orange groves, cattle and horse ranches. It is a beautiful state.

I have lived in Central Florida all my life. We worry about hurricanes more than sinkholes. Tornadoes are worrisome too. But you can't live in fear. Usually there is some kind of warning if a sinkhole is happening. Cracks in foundation, creaking sounds. All you can do is prepare and pay attention when it comes to any natural disaster.

You have a way better chance of dying just driving around then getting sucked into a sinkhole. Don't let it bother you.

Don't let the fear mongers get to you. Disasters happen and there is nothing you can do to prevent them. Just take reasonable precautions and have good insurance.

My parents have a Manufacutred Home in Pinellas Park- just south of Tampa by 15-20 mins. I have never been worried about sink holes.

My grandparents had a house for over 30 years in the same area, agian no worries of sink holes.

I will admit that sink hole that happened in the beginning of March did get me thinking, but really we can not live our lives in fear. do the next right think and the rest will follow. Keep your gard up, but if it is your time.. Sink hole, ran over by bus.. if it is your time it is your time.

Good luck

Don't the towns and cities have surveys regarding sinkholes so that you can better decide the areas you want to live in?

I didn't sleep well for several days after that poor man went through his floor a few months ago...I kept having nightmares when I did doze off. I don't think I could do it. I worry about them in my area and I don't know that we've had any in the OKC area.

I'd say no thank you to a move like that and apply for a different job within the company.

Our aunt from Flower Mound is here visiting this week. It's nice to see someone else from there.
