HI...I just got off an hour and a half long phone call with a friend who has been dealing with an external hemmorhoid since the birth of her son 2 months ago. From talking to her she is also very depressed. She has yet to admit that one. Problem is this, her drs are telling her that it will go away over time and if it doesn't go away it will get smaller but she will have to just deal with it. It is consuming her so much she checks on it 20-30 times a day. Through online research she has heard horror stories about surgery and other things associated with it. I am asking here because I know I will get some honest and caring advice for her. Something that those other websites just dont give! THANK YOU!!

My kids are 4 and 18 months and I've had them ever since I pooped the first kid out. They do shrink & heal (or seem to have healed) but I can always count on them returning. After just having a colonoscopy and being told I have hemorrhoids(DUH!)all the doctor said was to add more fiber to my diet. thanks doc! I've tried tucs, and sitz baths and whatever else. My friend also had a bad case and she bought an OTC suppository and she said that made hers cleared up. Also researching on the internet I've read a lot of people use vics vapo rub...according to the people who have tried this it BURNS really bad but it works. I haven't tried it because mine are internal.
My son is 3 months old and I have hemorroids for the past two months. My mother is an RN and told me to just carry Tucks with me (the little hemorroid wipes) and use them everytime I use the bathroom, or more if needed. It helps a LOT, of course they always come back but it shrinks them and makes bathroom time a lot more pleasant.
Post-childbirth hemorrhoids are pretty normal. They'll shrink or go away, but might flair up again from time to time. It's not a big deal. Tell your friend to stay off the internet--that's a great way to scare yourself to death with misinformation.
I'd agree with those who are saying she should call her OB/GYN re. depression. This kind of obsession over something as simple as a hemorrhoid doesn't seem normal. At all.

My name is M. and I have the same story as your friend. I have a son that is 4 yrs. old. When I have him I had hemorroid. My doctor told me to put some hemorroid patch to make i go away, but it did not go away, so my doctor told me that he was going to do surgery. At first i was scared when he mentioned surgery. It was not bad, he just cut my hemorroid. After a week i felt better. Please, feel free to e-mail if you have anymore question.
My real concern here is your friend's state of mind. How does she have time to check her bottom 20-30 times a day with a 2 month old (I didn't have time to pee). Sometimes depression manifests with obsessive/compulsive actions (I had PPD for a year before I realized what it was). I think you should suggest that she see her doctor for a depression screening. She may find that once she's thinking clearly her hemorrhoid isn't as worrisome (though I know they can be horrible).
Hello,first of all let me say i feel her pain in a lot of ways. I had a very large internal one after the birth of my son last october and it took a VERY long time to go away. almost seven months. i tried EVERYTHING and was even going to the dr.s weekly for exams(which by the way is worse than the hemmoroid)i was one week away from a surgery consultaion and then without any of my medications,it STOPPED HURTING!! I took a bath every night to easy the pain and lots of fiber,i never got any relief and it was all i could think about. But now its not painfull you have to watch your diet and have a VERY understanding husband.
I had that same problem, external type as well, and it does go down and go away after awhile. I used Tucks as well and Preparation H. It helps a lot. They also have prescription strength ointments as well, she should ask her doctor. They SHOULD know about this, I would think. Also, soaking in a good warm to hot bath is also good, with espom salts. About your friend being depressed though... Um, that's called post-partum Blues/Depression. She should REALLY get help for it... her OB/GYN should be alerted to this... if her OB doesn't seem like much help, then see her Primary Care Physician. As we all know, if a new mother is depressed, this CAN affect the care of her baby... and also, there are studies that show a depressed mother can affect her baby's feelings as well. Even though they are just an infant, proper bonding is strong and infants need this. SOMETIMES a depressed mother will not be able to 'bond' with her baby... this is another issue. There are ripple effects. If your friend is married, does her husband 'know' that she is depressed? It is not something that should be ignored. Good luck and your friend is lucky to have you who cares. Take care.

I have had external hemmorhoids with both children and both times, they went away over time. Your friend should try (I know it's hard) to not think about it so much and to stop reading all of those websites since it is not helping her, only scaring her. And to just enjoy her baby. These precious times with a newborn don't last very long, as you know with two children.

Tell your friend that there is no EASY Button on this one. I had those after the birth of all three of my children. The only thing that I can suggests is to keep it clean, use lots of cold compresses and find an external cream that works for her. I tried two or three, the one that worked for me was Tucks. They can last a long time, but they do go away eventually. Tell your friend to stay happy, that works too.

It sounds a little strange, but iceing them seems to help. I looked up "homeopathic Hemorrhoids relief" and found http://www.quickcare.org/gast/hemorrhoid-relief-at-home.html but don't know about some of the products they recommend. I also looked up "Home Remedies Hemorrhoids relief" and found http://www.homemademedicine.com/hemorrhoids.html which I would probably put more faith in. I used "Tucks" for a short while after my son was born, but only during the first 6 weeks. Other than what I've given you here, listen to all the other moms here. They're so wise! :O) ~J.
I got hemorrhoids when i was pregnant and now that my daughter is 17 months they are gone, but i had them for awhile after she was born i just used tucks wipes every time i went to the bathroom. but they do come back every once in awhile. My mom had really bad hemorroids and she did have to get surgery but she said it was so worth it. (hers were really really bad) but i think she should just try not to worry about them, easier said than done i know. Maybe you should try to get her to talk about being depressed, that sounds like the real problem. i hope everything goes well.
I have had them since my first child was born and I don't plan on having surgery to get rid of them but they do go down over time. I've used tucks medicated pads after I had my daughters and if I happen to use the bathroom a lot and find they get irritated but other than that, I don't bother them at all. You sort of get used to them. I don't know what you can tell your friend to calm her down but after a couple of months or so, you do get used to them and you don't feel them until you use the bathroom a lot. So I don't know what advice you can give her that'll make her feel comfortable at this time. You can probably tell her to stop looking at them because that certainly won't make them go down any faster.
