I have a son that is going to be 2 on the 21st of this month. He has had many medical problems with speach and development. also problems sleeping durring the night. Now here is my question.. do you know of any child that has suffered from these sort of things and hair loss. I am questioning if they are related and if I should being overly worried about it. He has already been through a few tests, and it is so hard having to watch him go through these things. if anyone has any answers or advice i am all ears...

What can I do next?

Hi C.,
Sorry to hear that your little guy has medical problems. My two year old son also has medical problems, although quite different from yours. From my experience, keep questioning the doctor. If you are at all unsatisfied with the doc, go to another one. Also, even tho it is hard to put your child through tests and time consuming as well - do it. Otherwise you will never have peace of mind. My son is just ending 16 months of various treatments and tests because of cancer - he was never able to sleep through the night until we instilled a bed time routine (he was going through all this, and routine was all it took) it worked like a charm and he sleeps twelve hours straight now! Dont make the bedtime ritual too long, otherwise it can back fire - or so i have read....good luck and all the best to you and your loved ones.

It sounds like your son may have some genetic/nutritional issues. If he were my son, I would do some online research. First, I would to to Dr. Mark Hymna, M.D.'s site, www.ultrawellness.com. After you have looked over that site, and checked out stuff, click on "Tools", and select "Find a Doctor", and search for an M.D. in your area who practices Functional Medicine. I would get my son in to see that person ASAP.

My oldest has speech and language issues, technically they call it a speech and language disorder, what it means in plain english is that he has a very hard time processing language, he didn't say his first words until around 4 and by kinder had very limited words, everything had to be taught to him, for instance when a 2 year old is told to close the door, they get that the door is "closing" were as my son didn't he would close it but only because he may have heard the word door and would just do the opposite of what it was, meaning open or closed, he is still very delayed but he has made it to the 11th grade, it is a struggle, espescially trying to compreend the massive amounts of information, but he has good resource teachers and the school is amazing with him, the sleep issues w/out more info may just be the normal issues most 2-5 year olds go through, and the hair could be alopecia my niece has that, it really sounds like you have more then one thing going on, not one issue with lots of symptons.

My oldest son had/has a lot of the same issues, not the hairloss though. My son was sick a lot his first few years, earinfections, stomahc flu(often), croup and anything else that went around. He was a challenging baby and has had sleep issues since birth. His speech was delayed and I decided by age 2 that he was definitely different than his peers. After much testing he was diagnosed at age 3 with high-functioning autism. I don't mean to frighten you or diagnose your child, but autism rates have sky rocketed and it is unfortunately quite common now. The spectrum is large and some children are only mildly touched by it. I hope that your son does not have autism, but it may be something to check into. After finding the right supplements and sleep aid my son has made tremendous gains and is mainstreamed in school(1st grade). He has a best friend, and we see a bright future for him. Good luck and hang in there.

I am not a mother, yet I work with children with special needs. I had a case like this, yet I thought that he was losing his hair, come to find out when he woke up from nap one day, he had a pile of hair next to his mat. He was 5 at the time and I asked him what happend and he told me that he pulled his hair. I would ask the doctor if maybe that it is likely that your son could be doing this as a nervous disorder etc.

Just my two sense

Sorry to hear about your little guy.
Is he pulling his hair out????
It is dry out side, may be his scalp is dried out, try conditioner and let it sit on his head for a few mins while he takes a bath.
Sorry I don't have much help, but good luck.

As long as you are keeping in touch about the speech development with his pediatritian He/She should be able to guide you through that issue. Don't get too over worried about the speech yet, he is still quite young. About the sleeping issue, join the club. I have 3 children and they all had different kind of sleep issues for various reasons, again your pediatritian may help you pinpoint this problem but in the case of my children it was nothing medical, just normal childhood fears etc..
The hair loss actually happend to my girl when she was almost 2. she had tons of hair as a baby and it got quite thin over a period of about 6-9 mos. Then it came back. Her pediatrician screened her for several conditions that could cause this and she was fine. My pediatritian had seen it before and was not too concerned. You my want to try a pediatric dermatologist. I never did but wondered if a dermatologist would know more about it. Try to relax, it is amazing how the miriad of childhood conditions can get mom's so stressed. Good luck. Becky
