Are the icecream sales people in your area creepy? I cant remember the last time I saw someone selling Ice Cream from a truck/van that didnt make me want to run and hide. I couldnt fathom letting my kids buy ice cream from some of these weirdos. I dont remember things being so skeevy when I was a kid which wasnt all that long ago! It seems like anyone who can get a van & sams club membership is out selling Ice cream and who knows what else. Is this something thats unique to albuqueruqe or has anyone else noticed this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It is a shame that ice cream sales have gone to the weirdos. I love Ice cream but the only ones that I will even go outside for are the ones who have the little push carts. You can see what they are selling clearly and they cant exactly grab anyone and drive off.

It's against ordinance here. Several years back, an ice cream man was molesting children, so they shut everyone down in the city. A few weeks back (in the national news), there was several stories of people selling hardcore narcotics from their trucks, and using the ice cream truck as a cover. Yes, they were creepy and gross when I was a kid. All of them. My parents would not let us get ice cream from them, and I'm glad for that. The guy tried to grab one of my friends. He drove away and they never caught him.

We do have a few guys that ride a bike with a cooler and sell Popsicles, but they also have their wives and children with them. And, they live here and everyone knows each other. They are really nice, and it's more of a neighborhood thing. They sell the Popsicles for a dime, so I know they aren't making money. It's more fun for the kids. That, I'm OK with, because the whole neighborhood buys them, and they are never in other neighborhoods, or alone with kids.

Yes!! WHO is allowing these people to drive around in a windowless van and open up the sliding door and hand out and sell ice cream. Creepy!

To me it's like they could all be child abductors nowadays. I would never let my son buy ice cream from them, heck I wouldnt either! I dont want to get ducktaped! Lol.

And before anyone asks haha, I am positive he was selling ice cream because it happened right in front of me and they have that "ice cream man" song they played off of a cd player box they have inside their windowless van.

Parents need to keep a closer eye on who is selling their child ice cream. Its sad to me that this is even an issue. Buying ice cream from the ice cream man used to be so harmless.

Thats the way it is in my neighborhood too...I think once when my dd was young (shes almost 17) hubby took her to the curb when a van jing-a-linged around the corner. He got her the Bomb pop and held her the whole time. Then promptly informed her that would never happen again and to stay away if she ever seems those vehicles again.

He said the dude was smelly as all get out, missing most of his teeth and just plain physically ishy/dirty. He offered to tear her treat open and hubby literally yelled NO (I heard him for the patio where I was planting some plowers in pots).

As a kid...not too far from where we live, both hubby and I had wonderful experiences with the ice cream man trucks, but certainly different now. As a kid these fellas seemed to work for a company, wore little uniform button down tops...ball caps with the matching logs...very 1970's version of the Good Humor man for us. Like they all had assigned routes, etc. We typically saw 2-3 fellas in an entire summer...different days they must have worked?

Todays guys...definately skeevy here!

Aww, come on, those guys are as trustworthy as their "carney' counterparts. They gotta support their drug and drinking habits some way!

It's been a very long time since I have seen an ice cream truck! I remember the guy that used to drive near us when I was a kid had a dalmation with him in the truck! When I was in middle school our ice cream truck guy was my friend's dad!

Come to think of it-yes, they are always creepy! And their trucks are always run down. Ours even sells candy cigarettes!

That being said I do let my kids get ice cream. I always accompany them because a kid in the town over from me was run over by the ice cream man right in front of her house on a quiet cul de sac.

Yes - very. My son is 4 years old - so I go to the truck with him. I ask my son what he wants, and I'm the one that tells the ice cream man and I'm the one to pay. I'll keep on going to the truck w/ my son and then when he gets older, I'll make sure that I'm in view of him & the truck when he's able to get the ice cream himself.

I don't remember what the ice cream looked like when I was a kid. All I remember was focusing on the ice cream.

There's a lot of questionable people around. So I always keep and eye on my kid and NEVER let him play a lone outside, even in our back yard. Fault me if you want, but I currently live in CA - and there's a lot of predators here. You hear a lot about it on nightly news and I'm not taking any chances.

BTW - I love ice cream drumsticks! And always get one for my self when we get ice cream. Waiting for the truck now. He usually comes in the late afternoon! :)

Enjoy your summer, but make sure to keep your kids safe!! :)

Oh heck, don't kid yourself-they have always been skeevy.
I was NEVER allowed to approach the ice cream man as a child growing up in FL. early 80's -early 90's.
Nev-er!
My mother always cited the Adam Walsh case for her heightened "over protectiveness". But you know what, I am grateful. And parent my children the same.
The other night on America's Most Wanted they were revisiting a case about a ice cream man kidnapping and raping a young girl. So yeah, there is reason to be leery.

We have a family that own like four vans. We get them through here almost daily. Sometimes twice a day. Once a week during the summer I let my kids pick something out from one of them.

They know when they see me out there with the kids to stop..and to keep going if I am not out there.

I am glad it is just the same family that has stuck to it in our area. I think I would not buy from any one else if I saw new people circling:)

awww what a shame,, We love the ice cream truck here! Hes a nice looking young man, maybe mid 30s. Clean cut, and has all his teeth.lol.. He comes by nearly everyday at the same time. We hear him coming and if my grand daughter is here she lets us know and we grab some money and go out to the curb. He only comes by our house once, so its not as if he circles the block over and over leering at kids. We do have laws for what hours he can work, how loud his speaker can be while driving and how soft it has to be when he stops. If he has to park for more than a certain ammount of time he has to turn it off. Its even a cute song that isnt hard to listen to either. He has been very good about telling kids to stand back and not run in the street. He warns them if he sees cars coming and doesnt start asking questions or anything that starts to feel too personal or creepy. He displays all his permits and licenses with his name. We even think his prices are great! My grand daughter knows she is not allowed to go out without one of us too. Shes not yet 4 so thats a standard rule anyway. But there may come a time I will stand at the doorway and let her go with $1 to get the popsickle she loves. She always yells thankyou to him and he yells youre welcomed right back at her.

The family across the street from us owns an ice cream truck. They are involved in various business adventures like owning a store and operating it, so they have an employee (more than likely a friend) drive the truck and sell the ice cream. He stops by most every day in front of their house, and their kids, neighbor kids and our kids run out. If the owner is home he treats everyone, otherwise the kids buy their own.

That being said, if I saw something suspicious or creepy I would contact City Hall and ask who I could file a complaint with, as I'm guessing that the truck owner/lessee had to get a business license, a seller's permit and file a DBA to register the name they are doing business under. I'm sure the city would want to know if something not right was going on so they could check it out.

I just saw an ice cream truck on family member's street and thought the driver looked a bit scary. When I was growing up they always seemed to be old men and sometimes their wives were with them. Maybe my parents thought they looked creepy. Lol.
Oh and I was really surprised because I didn't know ice cream trucks still existed. I guess it's popular because anybody can do it as long as they have a driver's license.
