Sleeping Problem... - North Anson,ME

My 13 month old daughter is usually very good about going to bed and staying asleep. Last night however she woke up at 1:30 screaming, I picked her up, changed her diaper, tried to feed her a bottle, tried laying her down with me and nothing stoped her from crying. She didn't have a fever or anything so I don't know what happened. After a LONG while she finally calmed down and I took her over by her crib. She did not want to go in it. I stood holding her and turned on her soother, she just kept pointing to the crib and making a "hmmm?" sound. I tried to put her in it but she freaked out. I even stood there with her talking to her and rubbing her back. I eventually got her monkey and brought her to bed with me. She started crying again for about 5 minutes and finally settled down. I don't want her to get used to sleeping with me. Im wondering if she had a night terror? Can babies get them that young?? Any ideas, experience, or facts to help me help her sleep is more than welcome!

What can I do next?

She sounds like she might have an ear infection. My DD used to do that too. She'd never run a fever and the only way that we could tell that she had one is if she acted like she didn't want to lay down. It's hurts their ears to lay flat. We'd take her in and yep, she'd have an infection! If it's not her ears, then she just might have had a bad dream or she could be teething her molars.

My first thought was maybe she got pinched or poked by something in the crib.... This morning, did you do a thorough check of her crib, just to make sure nothing is poking her or pinching her and that there are gaps where she got a foot or hand caught?

However, I think that when babies start dreaming, or being conscious of it, as their brains are getting overloaded with info/stumuli, their dreams can really scare them, and it could just be that she was associating the dream-scariness with the crib.

Is she teething? Sometimes teething pain or pain from ear infections gets worse at night.

I will say that once they get used to sleeping one way (like having you hold her or sooth her to sleep), they want it that way every time.... and it can be very hard to break (and you may have to "break the habit" a couple of times.... we're dealing with right now, again, with our 2yo--he was sick a couple of weeks ago and I got him at 1:30, with a temp and the poor thing was miserable for a day.... but after that one night of me getting him when he woke up in the night, he wanted it every night after that, even when he was better, and I had to do some "tough love" (Ferber CIO method) and it was awful...... but at least we're all not sleep deprived, which is healthier for all of us in the long run. But I made good and sure he was 100% healthy before I tried that, and I wouldn't hesitate to get him if I thought he was sick.

Anyway, long story short, I would say, check the crib, and have her checked out or at least call the pediatrician if you have concerns.... A friend's toddler never had a fever when he had earaches/ear infections, but would cry at night (the moving of the infected fluid in the ear shifting can cause a lot of pain, and lying horizontally during sleep will allow it to shift like that but it doesn't usually happen right away). He had no other symptoms of ear infection, though, other than night crying.

My 13 month daughter is doing the same for the last week. I think it is a combination of her room getting a little cool in the night time when our heating system drops the temp. (midnight-6am) and teething. This is the time when they can start to get their first set of molars - youch!

I've noticed that she has been getting red cheeks occasionally, just got a diaper rash yesterday and has been a bit clingier than normal lately. Last night I put her in warmer PJ's (doubled up cotton ones with a footy pair) and she slept great.

you'll figure it out soon - good luck

"Night Terrors."
Look it up online.
It is a developmental thing.
From about this age.
My kids had them from about 1 years old.

OR... maybe there was a bug or something in her crib????

all the best,

My son never has had a fever with an ear infection. The only time I know he had a fever was when he had Hand, Foot, & Mouth. ONLY TIME.

Also, my son 'acted up' for a few nights and when I took my daughter in for her well-visit, I simply asked the pedi to check my son's ears, nose, & throat... Just because he wasn't sleeping like he normally does... That was the ONLY thing that made me ask and my son had swimmers ear of all things! Probably from playing in the bath. After 2 days of ear drops all was normal once again.

I was lucky with my son with the 'sleeping next to mom' thing. He only wants to be near me when he's sick. He HATES sleeping with anyone. He prefers to be in his own bed by himself. My daughter... She was a difficult one to get to sleep on her own from day one.
